Messi, Neymar score in Barca win, but Valdes injury casts shadow

Barcelona briefly moved to the top of La Liga with a comfortable 3-0 win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday, however their joy was tempered by a serious looking injury to goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Neymar tapped home to give the hosts an early lead before Valdes collapsed to the ground whilst making a routine save holding his right knee.

The Spanish international was in tears as he was stretchered from the field and could have played his last game for the club having already signalled his intention not to renew his contract at the end of the season.

The injury could also rule him out of the World Cup.

Lionel Messi continued his fine run of form to make it 2-0 from a wonderful Andres Iniesta pass on the half hour before Neymar rounded off the scoring 23 minutes from time.

Barca took a temporary lead over Atletico Madrid, who went top of the table after beating Granada, and now own a two-point edge on Real Madrid. Barca rivals Madrid fell 2-1 to Sevilla.

Buoyed by Sunday’s 4-3 win over Real which put them right back in the title race, Barca started brightly as Messi was adjudged to have been just offside when he thought he had opened the scoring from Iniesta’s through ball.

It took the hosts just a further 60 seconds to take the lead for real as Messi fed Alexis Sanchez and his cross left Neymar with the simplest of tasks to roll the ball into an empty net.

The Brazilian then fired into the side-netting from another Messi pass as Barca tore the visiting defence apart on the counter-attack before Yoel Rodriguez made a fine save from Messi as he was once again played in one-on-one with the keeper by Iniesta.

Unfortunately for Barca, though, the most noteworthy moment of the game came midway through the half when Valdes appeared to jar his knee when trapping Fabian Orellana’s free-kick at the second attempt.

The club said the 32-year-old had been taken to hospital for further tests, but Spanish media reported Valdes could be out for up to six months ruling him out for the rest of the season and the World Cup.

Messi doubled his side’s advantage seven minutes later when he did finally finish off another fine assist from Iniesta for his eighth goal in his last four games.

Barca were thankful to Valdes’ replacement, Jose Manuel Pinto, nine minutes after the break as he made a brilliant double save from Augusto Fernandez and Santi Mina.

And Neymar then sealed the three points after a period of Celta pressure just after the hour mark as he controlled Sanchez’s pass and left two defenders on the floor before firing left-footed into the far corner.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.

The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.

These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.

“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.

“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.

“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.

“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”

Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.

There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.

“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.

“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.

“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”

Changing visa rules

For decades the UAE has granted two and three year visas to foreign workers, tied to their current employer. Now that's changing.

Last year, the UAE cabinet also approved providing 10-year visas to foreigners with investments in the UAE of at least Dh10 million, if non-real estate assets account for at least 60 per cent of the total. Investors can bring their spouses and children into the country.

It also approved five-year residency to owners of UAE real estate worth at least 5 million dirhams.

The government also said that leading academics, medical doctors, scientists, engineers and star students would be eligible for similar long-term visas, without the need for financial investments in the country.

The first batch - 20 finalists for the Mohammed bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Distinction.- were awarded in January and more are expected to follow.
