Manchester United are facing a goalkeeping dilemma ahead of the Premier League season with first-choice David de Gea linked with a move to Real Madrid and Victor Valdes put up for sale by manager Louis van Gaal.
Here is a list of potential targets to replace them:
Hugo Lloris
The France international has been linked with United for some time and his steely personality would appear to fit the bill for Old Trafford’s grand stage. But a broken wrist means the 28-year-old keeper is set to miss the start of the season.
Sergio Romero
The 28-year-old Argentine is available after being released by Sampdoria and would bring considerable international experience having won more than 60 caps for his country. Van Gaal knows Romero from their time together at Dutch club AZ Alkmaar between 2007 and 2009.
Jasper Cillessen
Another goalkeeper Van Gaal knows well from their time together in the set-up of the Netherlands national team, and the 26-year-old Ajax goalkeeper was the United manager’s first-choice at the 2014 World Cup. Would not come cheap.
Tim Krul
Sent on by Van Gaal as a 120th-minute substitute in Holland’s 2014 World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica and became an instant penalty shoot-out hero. Spent nine years at Newcastle United but has reportedly been unsettled in the past year.
Fraser Forster
The two-metres tall England international impressed enormously after joining Southampton from Celtic in 2014 and was possibly on the way to winning the Premier League’s Golden Glove before breaking his kneecap in March. May not be in action again until 2016.
