The applause for the new champions Atletico Madrid was magnanimous and genuine, but the mood turned quickly among Barcelona fans after Saturday’s game.
As Atletico celebrated in the middle of the pitch, so Barca’s players slunk off towards the tunnel and the dressing rooms. As they did, they were booed loudly. There were no heroes and the fans let them know how they felt after Barca finished the season without a trophy for the first time in six years.

Applauded when they arrived at the stadium, for they were still in with a chance of winning the league, Barca’s players were barracked as they left the underground car park for their homes in the city’s best suburbs.
Coach Gerardo Martino resigned after the match after a season in charge, while club president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced that there would be profound changes at the club.
The first of those changes was announced on Monday evening with the news that Luis Enrique will become manager on a two-year contract after he stepped down from being Celta Vigo manager on Friday.
He will be unveiled on Wednesday at Camp Nou in the same room where his former teammate Carles Puyol said his goodbyes last Thursday. Barca was a club undergoing significant changes before Bartomeu’s words. Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has been planning for new arrivals for months and the first of their new signings, German goalkeeper Ter Stegen, 21, was announced on Monday evening after moving from Borussia Monchengladbach.
He will replace the outgoing Victor Valdes. Valdes’ deputy and recent first team goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto, 38, has not had his contract renewed.
Loan player Rafinha Alcantara, 21 will return from playing 32 league games under Enrique at Celta Vigo, as will striker Gerard Deulofeu from Everton, yet bigger name arrivals and departures are certain this summer.
Only Lionel Messi, who signed his latest new and improved contract which will make him the best paid player in football, and Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique – who signed a new three-year deal on Tuesday – and Neymar can be guaranteed to be at Camp Nou when the new season starts in August.
The club will listen to offers for every other player. That is not to mean that they will depart, but if Barca were to get a bid for Cesc Fabregas which would allow them to make a profit on what they paid Arsenal in 2012 then they would be predisposed to sell.
Enrique will speak about his own targets and preferences with Zubizarreta but it is the latter who has the larger sway over incoming players. The coach is given the ingredients and told to work with them.
Barca need strengthening, specifically in defence where they have failed to buy a central defender for three seasons now. Puyol has been injury prone, Javier Mascherano error prone, Pique off form and the home grown Marc Bartra not strong enough physically. Daniel Alves is sublime, but angling for a huge final contract – over which he’s unlikely to be indulged at Camp Nou.
In midfield, Xavi is 34, Alex Song has not shown that he is Barca standard, while up front Messi has suffered his worse run of form in the last three months. Wide men Pedro and Alexis Sanchez also face uncertain futures.
The funds are in place and the transfer ban imposed by Fifa has been lifted. Off the field, Enrique needs to try and calm the boardroom instability – an almost impossible task.
Barca’s directors are prone to falling out, but the club remains hugely attractive to footballers around the world, their philosophy of attractive, attacking football too. Enrique is a believer in the Barca imprint.
“I like teams which repeat their style, clubs that are synonymous with one style,” he said a year ago. He is now in charge of regaining that style before he can start to repeat it.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Multitasking pays off for money goals
Tackling money goals one at a time cost financial literacy expert Barbara O'Neill at least $1 million.
That's how much Ms O'Neill, a distinguished professor at Rutgers University in the US, figures she lost by starting saving for retirement only after she had created an emergency fund, bought a car with cash and purchased a home.
"I tell students that eventually, 30 years later, I hit the million-dollar mark, but I could've had $2 million," Ms O'Neill says.
Too often, financial experts say, people want to attack their money goals one at a time: "As soon as I pay off my credit card debt, then I'll start saving for a home," or, "As soon as I pay off my student loan debt, then I'll start saving for retirement"."
People do not realise how costly the words "as soon as" can be. Paying off debt is a worthy goal, but it should not come at the expense of other goals, particularly saving for retirement. The sooner money is contributed, the longer it can benefit from compounded returns. Compounded returns are when your investment gains earn their own gains, which can dramatically increase your balances over time.
"By putting off saving for the future, you are really inhibiting yourself from benefiting from that wonderful magic," says Kimberly Zimmerman Rand , an accredited financial counsellor and principal at Dragonfly Financial Solutions in Boston. "If you can start saving today ... you are going to have a lot more five years from now than if you decide to pay off debt for three years and start saving in year four."

Although social media can be harmful to our mental health, paradoxically, one of the antidotes comes with the many social-media accounts devoted to normalising mental-health struggles. With Hope UAE is one of them.
The group, which has about 3,600 followers, was started three years ago by five Emirati women to address the stigma surrounding the subject. Via Instagram, the group recently began featuring personal accounts by Emiratis. The posts are written under the hashtag #mymindmatters, along with a black-and-white photo of the subject holding the group’s signature red balloon.
“Depression is ugly,” says one of the users, Amani. “It paints everything around me and everything in me.”
Saaed, meanwhile, faces the daunting task of caring for four family members with psychological disorders. “I’ve had no support and no resources here to help me,” he says. “It has been, and still is, a one-man battle against the demons of fractured minds.”
In addition to With Hope UAE’s frank social-media presence, the group holds talks and workshops in Dubai. “Change takes time,” Reem Al Ali, vice chairman and a founding member of With Hope UAE, told The National earlier this year. “It won’t happen overnight, and it will take persistent and passionate people to bring about this change.”

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.
