ABU DHABI // An injury-time goal from Riki van Steeden broke African hearts last night as Oceania champions Auckland City beat 10-man TP Mazembe 3-2 at Zayed Sports City.
Paul Posa's plucky amateurs rode their luck against the spirited African champions, and in the end it was the New Zealanders who sealed fifth spot in the Club World Cup courtesy of a Jason Hayne brace and van Steeden's late winner.
The Democratic Republic of Congo side suffered a 24th-minute setback when their goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba was shown a straight red card for handling outside his area.
Hayne's opener came just five minutes later and looked to have set the Kiwis on their way, but Mazembe hit back in the second-half.
Ngandu Kasongo's left-foot rocket brought them level, before Tresor Mputu's deft back-heel was smashed into the roof of the net by Kilitcho Kasusula. From there, only one team looked likely to win. But Auckland dug deep for a stunning victory.
"When we were 2-1 down I still thought we had a chance," said Posa. "I thought it would go to penalties when we equalised but we had a good game and delivered performance-wise.
"I'm not surprised, the character the team has shown in the last 12 months has been nothing short of outstanding."
Despite finishing sixth, Mazembe coach Diego Garzitto had no regrets and promised more from his side in the future. "The referee had no choice but to send Kidiaba off," said Garzitto. "We then lost a stupid goal which forced us to chase the game. We did everything we could and the team, which only had 10 men for most the game, didn't play that badly.
"It was important we came here, we have learned lots of things and hope to come back stronger after defending our African title next year."

Treaty of Friendship between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates
The United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates; Considering that the United Arab Emirates has assumed full responsibility as a sovereign and independent State; Determined that the long-standing and traditional relations of close friendship and cooperation between their peoples shall continue; Desiring to give expression to this intention in the form of a Treaty Friendship; Have agreed as follows:
ARTICLE 1 The relations between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates shall be governed by a spirit of close friendship. In recognition of this, the Contracting Parties, conscious of their common interest in the peace and stability of the region, shall: (a) consult together on matters of mutual concern in time of need; (b) settle all their disputes by peaceful means in conformity with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.
ARTICLE 2 The Contracting Parties shall encourage education, scientific and cultural cooperation between the two States in accordance with arrangements to be agreed. Such arrangements shall cover among other things: (a) the promotion of mutual understanding of their respective cultures, civilisations and languages, the promotion of contacts among professional bodies, universities and cultural institutions; (c) the encouragement of technical, scientific and cultural exchanges.
ARTICLE 3 The Contracting Parties shall maintain the close relationship already existing between them in the field of trade and commerce. Representatives of the Contracting Parties shall meet from time to time to consider means by which such relations can be further developed and strengthened, including the possibility of concluding treaties or agreements on matters of mutual concern.
ARTICLE 4 This Treaty shall enter into force on today’s date and shall remain in force for a period of ten years. Unless twelve months before the expiry of the said period of ten years either Contracting Party shall have given notice to the other of its intention to terminate the Treaty, this Treaty shall remain in force thereafter until the expiry of twelve months from the date on which notice of such intention is given.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF the undersigned have signed this Treaty.

Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
