Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has been in Dubai this week competing at the Icons Cup, a golf exhibition event featuring famous former sports stars from around the world. We caught up with the Scotsman to chat about the Anfield club.
ON STEVEN GERRARD’S RETIREMENT
Everybody that has followed Liverpool will look back on Stevie’s career very fondly and will remember him with great memories for what he’s achieved and done for the football club. He’s been a fantastic servant. Everybody’s disappointed to see him go, but life doesn’t go on forever. Some day he’ll be back, for sure.
ON GERRARD’S CAPTAIN QUALITIES
He was fantastic in the dressing room. Every club that has had any success has always had a real leader in the dressing room or people who were really strong — he was very strong. He was a fantastic ally to me as a manager and I’m sure it was the same for others. It has certainly be the same for Brendan [Rodgers]. Sad to see him go, but life moves on.

ON GERRARD’S PLACE IN LIVERPOOL PANTHEON
He would’ve graced any team, but I don’t who we would have left out. As long as it wasn’t me I’d be quite happy. He would improve any team.
ON PHILIPPE COUTINHO
The boy’s been really good this year. He has scored some vital goals. He’s settled down to the English way of life and performed really well. The way Liverpool play suits him and the manager.
ON LUIS SUAREZ’S SUCCESS
That’s why we signed him. He was fantastic for Liverpool. He’s settled in at Barcelona now and he’s starting to produce the goods. He’s a brilliant forward, a very good lad, very humble, loves his football and loves his family. He doesn’t want to get mixed up in anything else; all he wants to do is play football, go home, see his wife and kids. It’s been brilliant to see him being so successful.
ON MORE TO COME FROM SUAREZ
I hoped he’d be successful [when we signed him]. If you want to be successful you want to be winning things, and he has won things and will continue to win things. As good as he’s done for Barcelona, I think there’s still a bit more to come yet.
