India’s Rohit Sharma rips one-day record 264 v Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma broke the 50-over runs record on Thursday, smashing 264 from 173 balls in the first innings.

Rohit reached his first hundred in the 32nd over and made 200 in the 47th over, making him the first man to ever hit a second double ton in ODIs.

A boundary, no ball six and free hit six later, the record was his. He raced to the new record with another five boundaries and two sixes in the final three overs to bring India to 404/5, their fourth-highest team total in a one-day match. It was the ninth-highest overall total by any team.

Rohit made 50 off 72 balls, 100 off a clean 100, 150 from 125 and 200 from 151.

He surpassed countryman Virender Sehwag’s 219, made against the West Indies in 2011. Virat Kohli added an unbeaten 66 from 64 balls.

India seemed a sure bet to win the fourth ODI, with Sri Lanka still to bat in the second innings. The visitors’ highest total during the series so far is 274. India have won each of the first three matches in the five-match series.

Water waste

In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.

Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.

A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.

The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
