Hull City will back their forward Craig Fagan should he decide to take legal action against Newcastle's Danny Guthrie over the tackle that broke his leg.
Guthrie was sent off for hacking down Fagan in a crude challenge late in Saturday's English Premier League encounter at St James' Park.
Hull manager Phil Brown called for strong disciplinary action but the Football Association confirmed yesterday the player would face only the mandatory three-match ban for the red card.
Hull chairman Paul Duffen, told the Daily Mirror: "This is the sort of incident that, had it happened in the street, would have been regarded as common assault.
"I wouldn't want to prejudice any potential further action from Craig, yet what I will say is that he has the club's full support on this matter. We will be sitting down with him and discussing what to do, what decision or what action he might want to take.
"The timing of it for Craig and the implications, short term, for his career could be significant.
"He was in the team, playing well and you have to take into account his earning ability in terms of performance bonuses and things like that."
Fagan, signed from Derby this summer after a successful loan spell last season, could be out of action for up to three months.
Meanhwile, Chelsea have confirmed Ray Wilkins as the club's new assistant first-team coach following the departure of Steve Clarke to West Ham.
The former Chelsea midfielder Wilkins embarks on his second coaching spell with the club, having previously worked under former manager Gianluca Vialli.
The 52-year-old begins work immediately and steps into the role vacated by Clarke who resigned to team up with former Blues hero Gianfranco Zola, now in charge at West Ham.
Wilkins will work closely with new Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, and returns to the game after losing his coaching position with England Under-21s last year following Peter Taylor's exit and Stuart Pearce's subsequent appointment as head coach.
He became Chelsea's youngest captain at the age of 18 and was the club's player of the year on two occasions before moving on to Manchester United in 1979 after making 198 appearances and hitting 34 goals. He later played for clubs including AC Milan, Rangers and QPR, and won 84 England caps, before managing QPR and Fulham.

The major Hashd factions linked to Iran:
Badr Organisation: Seen as the most militarily capable faction in the Hashd. Iraqi Shiite exiles opposed to Saddam Hussein set up the group in Tehran in the early 1980s as the Badr Corps under the supervision of the Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The militia exalts Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei but intermittently cooperated with the US military.
Saraya Al Salam (Peace Brigade): Comprised of former members of the officially defunct Mahdi Army, a militia that was commanded by Iraqi cleric Moqtada Al Sadr and fought US and Iraqi government and other forces between 2004 and 2008. As part of a political overhaul aimed as casting Mr Al Sadr as a more nationalist and less sectarian figure, the cleric formed Saraya Al Salam in 2014. The group’s relations with Iran has been volatile.
Kataeb Hezbollah: The group, which is fighting on behalf of the Bashar Al Assad government in Syria, traces its origins to attacks on US forces in Iraq in 2004 and adopts a tough stance against Washington, calling the United States “the enemy of humanity”.
Asaeb Ahl Al Haq: An offshoot of the Mahdi Army active in Syria. Asaeb Ahl Al Haq’s leader Qais al Khazali was a student of Mr Al Moqtada’s late father Mohammed Sadeq Al Sadr, a prominent Shiite cleric who was killed during Saddam Hussein’s rule.
Harakat Hezbollah Al Nujaba: Formed in 2013 to fight alongside Mr Al Assad’s loyalists in Syria before joining the Hashd. The group is seen as among the most ideological and sectarian-driven Hashd militias in Syria and is the major recruiter of foreign fighters to Syria.
Saraya Al Khorasani: The ICRG formed Saraya Al Khorasani in the mid-1990s and the group is seen as the most ideologically attached to Iran among Tehran’s satellites in Iraq.

How Alia's experiment will help humans get to Mars
Alia’s winning experiment examined how genes might change under the stresses caused by being in space, such as cosmic radiation and microgravity.
Her samples were placed in a machine on board the International Space Station. called a miniPCR thermal cycler, which can copy DNA multiple times.
After the samples were examined on return to Earth, scientists were able to successfully detect changes caused by being in space in the way DNA transmits instructions through proteins and other molecules in living organisms.
Although Alia’s samples were taken from nematode worms, the results have much bigger long term applications, especially for human space flight and long term missions, such as to Mars.
It also means that the first DNA experiments using human genomes can now be carried out on the ISS.
