Hoteliers win a thriller

ABU DHABI // Arab Udupi won a thrilling final over Seven Seas, in the ADCC Division One tournament final at the Zayed Cricket Stadium. Arab Udupi made 265-7 and Seven Seas were restricted to 255-9. However, Udupi were given a 10-run penalty for their slow over rate leading to a tie but the hoteliers still got the win as they had lost fewer wickets. Seven Seas had faltered badly at the start of their run chase. But lower down the order Fayyaz Ahmed (89) and Mohsin Irshad (50) put together a 123-run stand for the sixth wicket after being 92-5 in the 21st over.

Davender Taneja did most of the damage by claiming 4-32 from his 10 overs. And Vikrant Shetty applied the brakes by claiming 3-42 from eight overs after Fayyaz and Irshad had put the Seven Seas reply back on track. Arab Udupi lost wickets at regular intervals but all their batsmen chipped in with useful contributions to post a challenging total after they were put in to bat first in the day-night final.

Naeemuddin Aslam was the top scorer, falling one runs short of his half century. Scores: Arab Udupi 265-7 (Md Ibrahim 32, Sunil Kanojia 21, Vikrant Shetty 42, N Aslam 49, Syed Maqsood 36, Safdar Niazi 42, Md Jamil 2-61, Javed Butt 2-36, Nasir Ahmed 2-41). Seven Seas 265-9 (Javed Butt 29, Nasir Ahmed 31, Fayyaz Ahmed 89, Mohsin Irshad 50, Davender Taneja 4-32, Vikrant Shetty 3-42).

Zubair Nadeem blasted a century in just 60 balls to help United Bank Limited beat the Mughals by 13 runs in a league match at the Zayed Stadium. It was the bankers' second win in three games to keep their hopes alive in Group B in which the UAE Exchange Centre and Yogi Group are the front-runners. Indika Sampath and Niresh Fernando shared an opening stand of 154 runs after Shadeep Silva had taken 5-7 in three overs to steer UAE Exchange to a nine-wicket win over Etihad Airways, their third defeat in many games.

Yogi Group notched up their second win to leave Electro Cooling Centre with one win and one loss in their group. Scores: UBL 177-6 in 20 overs (Zubair Nadeem 103, Farhan Anwar 3-14) bt Mughals 164 in 19.4 overs (Shoaib Sarwar 4-9, Nasir Siddiqui 4-22) by 13 runs; Etihad Airways 155 in 17.4 overs (Mohammed Omar 53, Shadeep Silva 5-7, Dananjaya Fernando 3-20) lost to UAE Exchange Centre 158-1 in 10.5 Overs (Indika Sampath 97, Niresh Fernando 50 n.o) by nine wickets ; Yogi Group 171-8 in 20 overs (Swapnil Patil 36, Jamsheed Butt 3-17) bt Electro Cooling Centre 84 in 14.2 overs (Salman Faris 3-22) by 87 runs.

Eurocon beat Ibsons Cricket Club by seven wickets after Jarnail Singh helped over haul the target of 210 with a knock of 92. In the other match, Lions set up a chase of 195 runs but Universal fell short by 13 runs. Brief scores: Ibsons CC 209-9. La Mer beach is open from 10am until midnight, daily, and is located in Jumeirah 1, well after Kite Beach. Some restaurants, like Cupagahwa, are open from 8am for breakfast; most others start at noon. At the time of writing, we noticed that signs for Vicolo, an Italian eatery, and Kaftan, a Turkish restaurant, indicated that these two restaurants will be open soon, most likely this month. Parking is available, as well as a Dh100 all-day valet option or a Dh50 valet service if you’re just stopping by for a few hours.
