Godoplhin's Barney Roy bagged the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany to record his fourth career prize at the highest level.
James Doyle produced a well-timed run on the Charlie Appleby-trained six-year-old Excelebration gelding to win from Communique in the silks of the Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed by a length and-a-quarter over the 12-furlong trip.
It was a prize won by Ghaiyyath, the world's highest rated horse this year, by 14 lengths for the same connections 12 months ago.
“We are delighted to see Barney Roy win another Group 1 race in his extended career,” Appleby told the godolphin.com.
“He has established himself as a real favourite in the yard and, now that we know he stays a mile and a half, it can hopefully open up a few more doors for him.
“A trip to Canada for the Group 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (Woodbine, 18 October), which we won with Old Persian last year, could potentially be on the cards for him now.”
Barney Roy was victorious for the second time in three visits to Germany. He was successful in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich on July 26 and was fourth in the Group 1 Preis von Europa at Cologne last month.
He raced in fifth on the outside of the eight runners before moving up a place after the first half-mile. He quickened strongly for Doyle as the whole field came over to the stands’ rail entering the straight and picked up in good style to challenge long-time leader Mark Johnston’s Communique with Franny Norton in the saddle for the lead a furlong and a half from home.
The German Derby runner up Torquator Tasso under Bauyrzhan Murzabayev was a further neck behind in third.
“It looked a strong race on paper and the field appeared to be quite closely matched, with the German Derby form and a few from Barney Roy’s previous races all tied in,” Doyle said after riding Godolphin’s 14th Group 1 winner for the year worldwide.
“He was much better on the ground today. It was a bit testing at Cologne but it had dried out here. It still wasn’t his perfect racing surface but he got away with it.”
Elsewhere at the Curragh, Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s Fujaira Prince had to settle for silver behind Dermont Weld’s Search For A Song in the Group 1 Irish St Leger.
It appeared Andrea Atzeni on Fujaira Prince had the race until Oisin Orr pushed Search For A Song clear in the final 150 yards to win by two lengths.

Commission caps
For life insurance products with a savings component, Peter Hodgins of Clyde & Co said different caps apply to the saving and protection elements:
• For the saving component, a cap of 4.5 per cent of the annualised premium per year (which may not exceed 90 per cent of the annualised premium over the policy term).
• On the protection component, there is a cap of 10 per cent of the annualised premium per year (which may not exceed 160 per cent of the annualised premium over the policy term).
• Indemnity commission, the amount of commission that can be advanced to a product salesperson, can be 50 per cent of the annualised premium for the first year or 50 per cent of the total commissions on the policy calculated.
• The remaining commission after deduction of the indemnity commission is paid equally over the premium payment term.
• For pure protection products, which only offer a life insurance component, the maximum commission will be 10 per cent of the annualised premium multiplied by the length of the policy in years.
Disclosure
Customers must now be provided with a full illustration of the product they are buying to ensure they understand the potential returns on savings products as well as the effects of any charges. There is also a “free-look” period of 30 days, where insurers must provide a full refund if the buyer wishes to cancel the policy.
“The illustration should provide for at least two scenarios to illustrate the performance of the product,” said Mr Hodgins. “All illustrations are required to be signed by the customer.”
Another illustration must outline surrender charges to ensure they understand the costs of exiting a fixed-term product early.
Illustrations must also be kept updatedand insurers must provide information on the top five investment funds available annually, including at least five years' performance data.
“This may be segregated based on the risk appetite of the customer (in which case, the top five funds for each segment must be provided),” said Mr Hodgins.
Product providers must also disclose the ratio of protection benefit to savings benefits. If a protection benefit ratio is less than 10 per cent "the product must carry a warning stating that it has limited or no protection benefit" Mr Hodgins added.

Education reform in Abu Dhabi
The emirate’s public education system has been in a constant state of change since the New School Model was launched in 2010 by the Abu Dhabi Education Council. The NSM, which is also known as the Abu Dhabi School Model, transformed the public school curriculum by introducing bilingual education starting with students from grades one to five. Under this new curriculum, the children spend half the day learning in Arabic and half in English – being taught maths, science and English language by mostly Western educated, native English speakers. The NSM curriculum also moved away from rote learning and required teachers to develop a “child-centered learning environment” that promoted critical thinking and independent learning. The NSM expanded by one grade each year and by the 2017-2018 academic year, it will have reached the high school level. Major reforms to the high school curriculum were announced in 2015. The two-stream curriculum, which allowed pupils to elect to follow a science or humanities course of study, was eliminated. In its place was a singular curriculum in which stem -- science, technology, engineering and maths – accounted for at least 50 per cent of all subjects. In 2016, Adec announced additional changes, including the introduction of two levels of maths and physics – advanced or general – to pupils in Grade 10, and a new core subject, career guidance, for grades 10 to 12; and a digital technology and innovation course for Grade 9. Next year, the focus will be on launching a new moral education subject to teach pupils from grades 1 to 9 character and morality, civic studies, cultural studies and the individual and the community.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
