Andy Hicks, a semi-finalist in 1995, put an end to Jimmy White's World Championship hopes with a hard-earned 10-8 victory at Sheffield's English Institute for sport.
The Tavistock Cueman was never behind in a high-quality match, which saw White make breaks of 124 and 120 and Hicks adding to the century tally with a 135 clearance. Hicks will play Rory McLeod next.
White, six times runner-up in the championship, missed out on the Crucible stages for the second successive year having recovered from 2-5 and 4-7 deficits to defeat Vince Mulldoon 10-8 in the previous round.
Another golden oldie, Tony Knowles, 53, followed White when he was beaten 10-4 by Irishman Rodney Goggins.
Scunthorpe professional Matthew Couch defeated Bristol's Andrew Norman 10-4, to set up a clash with 1991 World Champion John Parrott.
Liu Song, who needed to beat Supoj Saenla to retain his place on the main tour, showed great character to win 10-9.
