Spain's Primera Liga kicks off tonight, with six teams in action along the Spanish coast, in Valencia, Alicante and Malaga. All will appreciate the sea breeze, with temperatures of 40°C forecast as Spain wilts under another heat wave.
Hercules v Athletic Bilbao is the first game, with the 30,000-capacity Jose Rico Perez Stadium offering no cover and respite from the August Mediterranean sun.
It is the first match for Hercules in the top flight since 1996/97, though they were regulars among the big boys in the 1970s and 1980s, which was the main reason their stadium was rebuilt to stage 1982 World Cup games.
Their fortunes slipped and they spent the first half of the last decade in the regional third division behind city rivals Alicante.
Despite a substantial budget, Hercules did not buy any household names during the summer. They host an Athletic Bilbao side more confident of a solid league campaign than at any time in the last decade. With Spanish World Cup winners like Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente in the side, plus prodigy Iker Muniain, 17, the Basques are on an upward trajectory and expect to improve on last season's eighth-place finish. In tonight's second game, Malaga host a Valencia side who finished third last term but start this campaign without David Villa and David Silva, their two best players, who were sold in the summer.
Club stalwarts Carlos Marchena and Ruben Baraja have also departed, with Nikola Zigic, the Serbian striker, also leaving. Unai Emery, the coach has been busy, though, with 11 new arrivals at the Mestalla. The former Real Madrid and Getafe striker Roberto Soldado is their biggest signing so far.
Malaga are under new Qatari owners who have appointed Spain's only female chief executive to run the club. With seven arrivals and 12 departures over the summer, questions remain over whether Jesualdo Ferreira, the new Portuguese coach who arrived from Porto, can organise a side quickly enough to have an impact.
In the late game, the relegation favourites Levante entertain a Sevilla side dumped out of the Champions League qualifiers by the unheralded Portuguese side Braga, 5-3 on aggregate. The 4-3 home defeat stunned Sevilla, who expected to reach the Champions League group stages. It was the second time in four days that they had conceded four goals and the defeat puts pressure on coach Antonio Alvarez, who took charge in March. The former Sevilla player and technical director has been assured of his position, for now, but a poor league start will make it increasingly untenable.
Real Madrid and Barcelona open their accounts tomorrow with away games at Mallorca and Racing Santander, respectively.
Mallorca have seen several of their best players, like Borja Valero and Aritz Aduriz, depart and are in administration. Banned by Uefa from playing in the Europa League after not paying for several of the stars who helped them finish an impressive fifth last season, they also saw Gregorio Manzano, the hugely popular coach, depart. He has been replaced by Michael Laudrup, the once sublime Barcelona and Real Madrid forward now in his seventh management season.
Four of those years were spent at Brondby in his native Denmark, before he took Getafe on a fine Uefa Cup run in 2008, overseeing a side which bore little resemblance to Laudrup the player.
An unhappy, 13-game spell in charge of Spartak Moscow last year followed, before his return to Spain and the terminal chaos surrounding Mallorca.
Real were one of the few teams to beat Mallorca away last season and scored four times, while Barca put in four goals in each of their games against Racing last term. New Barca signing Javier Mascherano is unlikely to play; his transfer was being completed yesterday. But the Argentine holding midfielder is seen as a direct replacement for Yaya Toure.
Anything but two wins for the big two will be a surprise, but there are always shocks on the opening weekend, especially under the fierce Spanish sun.

'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”

What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which can lead to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer.
There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis C is mostly transmitted through exposure to infective blood. This can occur through blood transfusions, contaminated injections during medical procedures, and through injecting drugs. Sexual transmission is also possible, but is much less common.
People infected with hepatitis C experience few or no symptoms, meaning they can live with the virus for years without being diagnosed. This delay in treatment can increase the risk of significant liver damage.
There are an estimated 170 million carriers of Hepatitis C around the world.
The virus causes approximately 399,000 fatalities each year worldwide, according to WHO.

How to keep control of your emotions
If your investment decisions are being dictated by emotions such as fear, greed, hope, frustration and boredom, it is time for a rethink, Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, says.
Greed
Greedy investors trade beyond their means, open more positions than usual or hold on to positions too long to chase an even greater gain. “All too often, they incur a heavy loss and may even wipe out the profit already made.
Tip: Ignore the short-term hype, noise and froth and invest for the long-term plan, based on sound fundamentals.
Fear
The risk of making a loss can cloud decision-making. “This can cause you to close out a position too early, or miss out on a profit by being too afraid to open a trade,” he says.
Tip: Start with a plan, and stick to it. For added security, consider placing stops to reduce any losses and limits to lock in profits.
Hope
While all traders need hope to start trading, excessive optimism can backfire. Too many traders hold on to a losing trade because they believe that it will reverse its trend and become profitable.
Tip: Set realistic goals. Be happy with what you have earned, rather than frustrated by what you could have earned.
Frustration
Traders can get annoyed when the markets have behaved in unexpected ways and generates losses or fails to deliver anticipated gains.
Tip: Accept in advance that asset price movements are completely unpredictable and you will suffer losses at some point. These can be managed, say, by attaching stops and limits to your trades.
Boredom
Too many investors buy and sell because they want something to do. They are trading as entertainment, rather than in the hope of making money. As well as making bad decisions, the extra dealing charges eat into returns.

How to invest in gold
Investors can tap into the gold price by purchasing physical jewellery, coins and even gold bars, but these need to be stored safely and possibly insured.
A cheaper and more straightforward way to benefit from gold price growth is to buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Most advisers suggest sticking to “physical” ETFs. These hold actual gold bullion, bars and coins in a vault on investors’ behalf. Others do not hold gold but use derivatives to track the price instead, adding an extra layer of risk. The two biggest physical gold ETFs are SPDR Gold Trust and iShares Gold Trust.
Another way to invest in gold’s success is to buy gold mining stocks, but Mr Gravier says this brings added risks and can be more volatile. “They have a serious downside potential should the price consolidate.”
Mr Kyprianou says gold and gold miners are two different asset classes. “One is a commodity and the other is a company stock, which means they behave differently.”
Mining companies are a business, susceptible to other market forces, such as worker availability, health and safety, strikes, debt levels, and so on. “These have nothing to do with gold at all. It means that some companies will survive, others won’t.”
By contrast, when gold is mined, it just sits in a vault. “It doesn’t even rust, which means it retains its value,” Mr Kyprianou says.
You may already have exposure to gold miners in your portfolio, say, through an international ETF or actively managed mutual fund.
You could spread this risk with an actively managed fund that invests in a spread of gold miners, with the best known being BlackRock Gold & General. It is up an incredible 55 per cent over the past year, and 240 per cent over five years. As always, past performance is no guide to the future.
Skewed figures
In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000.
