With the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship teeing off this Thursday, here is a look at the favourites competing in the capital.
Dustin Johnson
Sure to garner significant attention this week, the big-hitting American makes his Middle East debut with a game seemingly suited to the National Course. Johnson, the world No 3, enjoyed a career year in 2016, winning the US Open to finally break his major duck and also at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the BMW Championship. He was later voted the PGA Tour player of the year.
Henrik Stenson
Another golfer with much to boast about in 2016, the world No 4 is the reigning British Open and Race to Dubai champion. With major finally secured, attention turns now to the other blot on his CV: an Abu Dhabi victory. The Swede has tasted success in Qatar and both Dubai tournaments, so needs the Falcon Trophy to complete the Desert set. Has been runner-up twice.
Danny Willett
Having risen steadily through the ranks the past few seasons, the Englishman arrives in Abu Dhabi as the world No 12 and reigning Masters champion. Willett has also tasted success in the UAE before, winning last year’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic. However, after posting a tied-eighth on debut in 2009, he has struggled in Abu Dhabi, twice missing the cut twice and only twice finishing inside the top 25.
Rickie Fowler
After disappointing on his Abu Dhabi debut with a tied-66th finish in 2015, the popular American sparkled on his return last year by earning a one-stroke victory to climb to fourth in the world rankings. Now sits 14th after a relatively poor 2016 in which he carded eight top-10 finishes. Looking to become the first player since Martin Kaymer in 2011 to successfully defend the Falcon Trophy.
Alex Noren
Even ranked at world No 10, the understated Swede flies in somewhat under the radar despite a superb 2016. Had four victories in the second half of the season, including November’s Nedbank Golf Challenge. However, aside from a tied-11th in 2008, has not typically fared well In Abu Dhabi, with a tied-31st finish his next best performance. Has never come into the event this high in the rankings, though.
