Rory McIlroy 'proud of myself' after blemish-free opening round at Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Rory McIlroy returned to competitive action on Thursday, bringing to an end three-and-a-half months away from the professional game.

He began slowly at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, presented by EGA, as was probably to be expected. Then he snapped a run of 11 straight pars with a birdie on his 12th hole, before picking up two more shots coming in.

Card complete, McIlroy signed for a blemish-free, 3-under-par 69 to conclude the morning three shots off playing partner and early leader Tommy Fleetwood. The Englishman is the current European No 1 and Abu Dhabi defending champion, no less.

All things considered, not too bad for fit-again McIlroy, then.

“First competitive round in over 100 days, so it's a little bit different,” he said. “But I did well. I stayed patient. I started off with 11 pars and could’ve been a lot better. It was nice to birdie three of the last seven and get in under 70. I was proud of myself the way I hung in there.”

McIlroy could feel well satisfied with his game, too. He missed one green in regulation, and his less-than-spectacular start found root in a comparatively cold putter.

He conceded afterwards to trying to hang onto Fleetwood’s coattails, since last year’s winner had climbed to 4-under by the 11th. But with the hard yards put in during his extended winter break, McIlroy knew things would eventually turn around.

“I was probably a little nervous on the first tee,” said the Northern Irishman, who withdrew from the event 12 months ago because of a rib injury that impacted his entire 2017 season.

“I had no problems last night or this morning. That was all fine. But I was just excited to get going. It's another season, a season that I feel like I'm as prepared for as any season I've started as a professional.”

The good company he was keeping provided a pretty decent marker. Not only did McIlory have Fleetwood to gauge his game against in Thursday's marquee three-ball around the National Course, but world No 1 Dustin Johnson as well. The American, who finished second on debut last year, came into the tournament having opened his 2018 with an eight-shot victory in Hawaii. A talented trio indeed.

“It was a great pairing to go out with, with Dustin and Tommy,” McIlroy said. “Tommy had one of the best years out of anyone last year, winning the Race to Dubai and having a few wins. DJ is obviously No 1 player in the world. So to see where I'm at compared to where they are, it was nice to see that, as well. Yeah, it was a good day.”

Others were similarly impressed.

“He plays with style and looks good,” Fleetwood said. “His swing is so powerful, but elegant at the same time. Everything he does looks right. You get certain players like that.

“I always felt everything Tiger Woods did looked right and was what you wanted a golfer to look like. That’s what Rory does.”

Typically, a fit and firing McIlroy does winning also. With Round 1 of 2018 under his belt, with the driver working and the iron play “pretty good”, a first victory in 16 months for the four-time major champion might not actually be that far off.

“My expectation coming into this week was that I could win,” said McIlroy, a four-time runner-up in Abu Dhabi.

“But after the first day, seeing where my game's at and playing alongside two of the most in-form players in the world right now, I feel like I'm not that far away.”

What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Coffee: black death or elixir of life?

It is among the greatest health debates of our time; splashed across newspapers with contradicting headlines - is coffee good for you or not?

Depending on what you read, it is either a cancer-causing, sleep-depriving, stomach ulcer-inducing black death or the secret to long life, cutting the chance of stroke, diabetes and cancer.

The latest research - a study of 8,412 people across the UK who each underwent an MRI heart scan - is intended to put to bed (caffeine allowing) conflicting reports of the pros and cons of consumption.

The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, contradicted previous findings that it stiffens arteries, putting pressure on the heart and increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke, leading to warnings to cut down.

Numerous studies have recognised the benefits of coffee in cutting oral and esophageal cancer, the risk of a stroke and cirrhosis of the liver.

The benefits are often linked to biologically active compounds including caffeine, flavonoids, lignans, and other polyphenols, which benefit the body. These and othetr coffee compounds regulate genes involved in DNA repair, have anti-inflammatory properties and are associated with lower risk of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.

But as doctors warn, too much of anything is inadvisable. The British Heart Foundation found the heaviest coffee drinkers in the study were most likely to be men who smoked and drank alcohol regularly.

Excessive amounts of coffee also unsettle the stomach causing or contributing to stomach ulcers. It also stains the teeth over time, hampers absorption of minerals and vitamins like zinc and iron.

It also raises blood pressure, which is largely problematic for people with existing conditions.

So the heaviest drinkers of the black stuff - some in the study had up to 25 cups per day - may want to rein it in.

Tips from the expert

Dobromir Radichkov, chief data officer at dubizzle and Bayut, offers a few tips for UAE residents looking to earn some cash from pre-loved items.

  1. Sellers should focus on providing high-quality used goods at attractive prices to buyers.
  2. It’s important to use clear and appealing photos, with catchy titles and detailed descriptions to capture the attention of prospective buyers.
  3. Try to advertise a realistic price to attract buyers looking for good deals, especially in the current environment where consumers are significantly more price-sensitive.
  4. Be creative and look around your home for valuable items that you no longer need but might be useful to others.
