Englishman Greg Owen and Argentina’s Fabian Gomez share lead at FedEx St Jude Classic

Englishman Greg Owen and Argentina’s Fabian Gomez carded three-under-par rounds of 67 to take a share of the lead with one round to play at the FedEx St Jude Classic at TPC Southwind.

Owen, who has yet to taste victory on the PGA Tour in 213 attempts since 1999, led after the first round on Thursday and repeated the feat two days later thanks to a third round which featured four birdies and a bogey.

Mansfield native Owen, 43, made a steady start by parring the first two holes before earning the first of his birdies at the par-five third.

He repeated the trick at the sixth before suffering a blip when he bogeyed the par-four 10th but recovered his composure to pick up further shots on the 14th and 18th holes to lie nine-under-par overall.

Gomez began with a bogey but recovered in fine style by picking up shots in four of his next five holes before his progress was tempered by bogeys at the 11th and 13th.

The pair are a shot ahead of overnight leader Brooks Koepka and Scott Brown, who posted third-round scores of 71 and 68 respectively.

Koepka, who led Austin Cook by one shot going into Saturday’s action, sank a 22-foot birdie at the 18th to move on to eight under, level with Brown who managed five birdies and three bogeys in an eventful two-under par round.

Cook (72) and Australia’s Matt Jones (68) are tied for fifth on six-under-par overall and are one shot ahead of a eight-strong group tied for seventh on five under, which includes Americans Ryan Palmer, Chris Smith and Chad Campbell.
