Frosted will try to secure his first victory over 2,000 metres in possibly the toughest test staged all year in North America after it was confirmed that the Breeders’ Cup Classic is the four year old’s intended target on November 5.
The grey son of Tapit will clash with Dubai World Cup winner California Chrome and rising star Arrogate in the US$5million (Dh18.4m) event, and will leave for Santa Anita from the Greentree facility at Saratoga on Sunday.
• Geoffrey Riddle: Godolphin's Frosted considered for showdown with California Chrome at Breeders' Cup Classic
Frosted has raced four times at 2,000 metres without success but showed he can live with the best at the distance when pushing last season’s Triple Crown hero American Pharoah for much of the way on the front end in the 2015 Travers Stakes before wilting to finish third to Keen Ice.
Frosted also ran a huge race to finish second to American Pharoah over 2,400 metres in the Belmont Stakes last season. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has long felt the Classic was a better fit for Frosted in comparison to the Dirt Mile, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President Ruler of Dubai, and John Ferguson, the Godolphin chief executive, clearly agree.
“There is only a short run to the first turn in the Mile, and if you draw wide, you are at a severe disadvantage,” McLaughlin told the Godolphin website. “It is also a speed race, and you can get a lot of traffic.
“The team have chosen the Classic, which will suit Frosted. As long as he breaks decently, he will run well.
“California Chrome is obviously the one to beat. But maybe we can beat him with the race shape.”
Godolphin run Holler in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley today up against Al Quoz Sprint winner Buffering, five-time Group 1 winner Chautauqua and eight others.
Holler has not run since an unsuccessful trip to England in June when he finished seventh in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes won by Twilight Son.
