Wilfried Zaha returns to lead Crystal Palace to emphatic win at 10-man West Brom

Wilfried Zaha underlined his importance to Crystal Palace after scoring twice on his return to help his team cruise to a 5-1 Premier League win over 10-man West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Zaha had missed the past two games after testing positive for the coronavirus, and in his absence Palace lost both matches. Back in the team for this 200th Premier League start, the Ivory Coast international scored Palace's second and fourth goals at The Hawthorns.

The visitors took an early lead after Darnell Furlong diverted a Zaha cross into his own net in the eighth minute, but West Brom deservedly pulled level on the half hour mark when Conor Gallagher fired into the bottom corner.

A match that was shaping up to be an even contest turned in Palace's favour four minutes later as Matheus Pereira was controversially sent off, after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention, for appearing to kick out at Patrick van Aanholt.

With the numerical advantage, Palace dominated the second half and Zaha got his side ahead 10 minutes after the break with a fine finish, before Christian Benteke scored his first goal of the season soon after the make it 3-1.

Zaha then grabbed his second after a driving run from Eberechi Eze, with Benteke also earning a brace to ensure Palace scored five goals away from home in the Premier League for the first time.

"We looked dangerous throughout the game and I am really pleased," Palace manager Roy Hodgson told the BBC.

"Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke showed they are goalscorers at heart. Every team would miss their best player.

"Our front four have enormous talent, Premier League quality. If we can get them the ball often enough I'd expect them to score goals."

While the three points move Palace toward mid-table, the defeat keeps promoted West Brom in the relegation zone, and Baggies manager Slaven Bilic conceded that Pereira's dismissal turned the game.

"We played good. They scored a cheap first goal, but then we came back, we equalised and we were on top of the game," he said. "It all looked really good but that [red card] moment was a decisive moment in the game."

Vardy strikes late to sink United

The only club below West Brom in the table, Sheffield United, slumped to another defeat after Leicester City claimed a late 2-1 win at Bramall Lane.

Ayoze Perez opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute but the lead lasted just two minutes as Oliver McBurnie headed home the equaliser.

Sheffield United were perhaps lucky to still have 11 players on the pitch by the end of the first half, with Max Lowe escaping a second yellow card for a rash, late challenge on Perez.

The contest maintained a good tempo throughout but neither side looked like they would find the crucial goal to earn all three points. That was until the first minute of injury time when Jamie Vardy latched on to a through pass from James Maddison before curling his effort past United keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Leicester, who had lost their previous two matches, move back into the top four, while United remain stuck on one point, six from safety.

UAE currency: the story behind the money in your pockets
Red flags
  • Promises of high, fixed or 'guaranteed' returns.
  • Unregulated structured products or complex investments often used to bypass traditional safeguards.
  • Lack of clear information, vague language, no access to audited financials.
  • Overseas companies targeting investors in other jurisdictions - this can make legal recovery difficult.
  • Hard-selling tactics - creating urgency, offering 'exclusive' deals.

Labour dispute

The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested. The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.

A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.

The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.

When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

The major Hashd factions linked to Iran:

Badr Organisation: Seen as the most militarily capable faction in the Hashd. Iraqi Shiite exiles opposed to Saddam Hussein set up the group in Tehran in the early 1980s as the Badr Corps under the supervision of the Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The militia exalts Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei but intermittently cooperated with the US military.

Saraya Al Salam (Peace Brigade): Comprised of former members of the officially defunct Mahdi Army, a militia that was commanded by Iraqi cleric Moqtada Al Sadr and fought US and Iraqi government and other forces between 2004 and 2008. As part of a political overhaul aimed as casting Mr Al Sadr as a more nationalist and less sectarian figure, the cleric formed Saraya Al Salam in 2014. The group’s relations with Iran has been volatile.

Kataeb Hezbollah: The group, which is fighting on behalf of the Bashar Al Assad government in Syria, traces its origins to attacks on US forces in Iraq in 2004 and adopts a tough stance against Washington, calling the United States “the enemy of humanity”.

Asaeb Ahl Al Haq: An offshoot of the Mahdi Army active in Syria. Asaeb Ahl Al Haq’s leader Qais al Khazali was a student of Mr Al Moqtada’s late father Mohammed Sadeq Al Sadr, a prominent Shiite cleric who was killed during Saddam Hussein’s rule.

Harakat Hezbollah Al Nujaba: Formed in 2013 to fight alongside Mr Al Assad’s loyalists in Syria before joining the Hashd. The group is seen as among the most ideological and sectarian-driven Hashd militias in Syria and is the major recruiter of foreign fighters to Syria.

Saraya Al Khorasani:  The ICRG formed Saraya Al Khorasani in the mid-1990s and the group is seen as the most ideologically attached to Iran among Tehran’s satellites in Iraq.
