UCL round-up: Cristiano Ronaldo racks up another record in Real Madrid’s win over Malmo

  • Arabic

A round-up from Wednesday night’s Uefa Champions League matches.

MALMO v REAL MADRID

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed 500 career goals in the match away to Malmo.

Ronaldo, 30, netted his 500th and 501st goals to propel Madrid to a 2-0 victory against the Swedish champions in the Group A clash, also extending his record Champions League tally to 82.

Additionally, the Portuguese forward equalled Madrid legend Raul’s club record of 323, while setting a new Madrid Champions League record with his 67th goal for the Spanish giants.

Ronaldo reached the landmark in his 753rd game with 118 goals coming during his time at Manchester United, five while at boyhood club Sporting Lisbon and 55 for Portugal.

SHAKHTAR DONETSK v PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

Paris Saint-Germain kept their 100 per cent record intact, overcoming a potentially tricky visit to Shakhtar Donetsk. Goals from Serge Aurier and David Luis inside the first 25 minutes helped relieve any pressure on the Ligue 1 champions in the Arena Lviv, and their Ukrainian hosts could not find a way past Kevin Trapp in the PSG goal. A late Darijo Srna own goal put some gloss on the scoreline for PSG. Shakhtar look to be in trouble with two losses from as many games.

CSKA MOSCOW v PSV EINDHOVEN

Russian league leaders CSKA Moscow bounced back from their opening Group B defeat when they defeated 10-man Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven 3-2 at home on Wednesday.

A strike from Nigerian forward Ahmed Musa and a brace by Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia set CSKA on their way to a narrow victory that put them equal on three points with the other three teams in their group.

MANCHESTER UNITED v WOLFSBURG

FC ASTANA v GALATASARAY

Roger Canas rescued a point for Astana in a 2-2 draw at home to Galatasaray as the Kazakh side became the first team from the Central Asian nation to stage a match in the Champions League group stage.

Bilal Kisa’s stunning first-half strike in Kazakhstan put the Turkish champions in front but an own-goal from Hakan Balta restored parity at the Astana Arena.

A terrible mistake from Astana goalkeeper Nenad Eric appeared to have handed all three points to the visitors but Colombian Canas headed home a late equaliser to cap a frenetic finale and earn Astana their first ever point in Europe’s premier club competition.

The result left both sides with one point from two matches in Group C, behind both Atletico Madrid and Benfica, who face off in the Spanish capital later, on three points.

ATLETICO MADRID v BENFICA

Benfica inflicted Atletico Madrid’s first home defeat in the Champions League since 2009 as they came from behind to move top of Group C with a 2-1 win.

However, the Portuguese champions’ victory was overshadowed by the behaviour of some of their travelling fans, who threw flares at Atletico supporters after Nicolas Gaitan’s equalising goal.

Angel Correa had fired the hosts into a deserved lead midway through the first half.

However, Atletico were made to pay for a series of missed chances as Gaitan levelled and Benfica snatched all three points with a brilliantly executed counter-attack finished off by Goncalo Guedes just after the break.

Benfica now lead Atletico by three points, although the Spaniards remain two points clear of Champions League newcomers Astana and Galatasaray, who drew 2-2 in Kazakhstan.

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH v MANCHESTER CITY

Sergio Aguero scored a last minute penalty to give Manchester City a 2-1 comeback win at Borussia Moenchengladbach in Group D.

Gladbach, having waited 37 years for their first home game in Europe’s premier club competition, stunned their big-name opponents with a 54th minute goal by Lars Stindl.

City, who have goalkeeper Joe Hart to thank for keeping them in the game with half a dozen superb saves, drew level with Nicolas Otamendi’s deflected effort in the 65th before launching a late rally in search of a winner and with Argentine striker Aguero scoring from the spot.

The result sees City move up to three points with Gladbach still to earn any in Group D.

JUVENTUS v SEVILLA

Juventus put their miserable domestic form behind them to defeat Sevilla 2-0 in Group D thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Simone Zaza, and an excellent debut showing from Sami Khedira.

Morata headed an excellent Andrea Barzagli cross past the helpless Sergio Rico on 41 minutes, before substitute Zaza doubled Juve’s lead with a late breakaway goal in the 87th minute.

Khedira was named in the starting line-up for the first time since his summer move from Real Madrid, and proved influential, giving Juve the kind of stability they have lacked in Serie A this season.

The victory establishes Juventus as the outright leaders in Group D with a maximum six points after two matches.

Sevilla and Manchester City, who beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-1 in the other Group D match on Wednesday, both have three points.

Heavily-sugared soft drinks slip through the tax net

Some popular drinks with high levels of sugar and caffeine have slipped through the fizz drink tax loophole, as they are not carbonated or classed as an energy drink.

Arizona Iced Tea with lemon is one of those beverages, with one 240 millilitre serving offering up 23 grams of sugar - about six teaspoons.

A 680ml can of Arizona Iced Tea costs just Dh6.

Most sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, five teaspoons of sugar in a 500ml bottle.

Yemen's Bahais and the charges they often face

The Baha'i faith was made known in Yemen in the 19th century, first introduced by an Iranian man named Ali Muhammad Al Shirazi, considered the Herald of the Baha'i faith in 1844.

The Baha'i faith has had a growing number of followers in recent years despite persecution in Yemen and Iran.

Today, some 2,000 Baha'is reside in Yemen, according to Insaf.

"The 24 defendants represented by the House of Justice, which has intelligence outfits from the uS and the UK working to carry out an espionage scheme in Yemen under the guise of religion.. aimed to impant and found the Bahai sect on Yemeni soil by bringing foreign Bahais from abroad and homing them in Yemen," the charge sheet said.

Baha'Ullah, the founder of the Bahai faith, was exiled by the Ottoman Empire in 1868 from Iran to what is now Israel. Now, the Bahai faith's highest governing body, known as the Universal House of Justice, is based in the Israeli city of Haifa, which the Bahais turn towards during prayer.

The Houthis cite this as collective "evidence" of Bahai "links" to Israel - which the Houthis consider their enemy.
