Aston Villa's form has tailed off since the start of 2021 after a fine start to the season.
Defeats against Manchester United and Manchester City bring no shame, but the damaging losses to Burnley, Sheffield United, Leicester, West Ham and Tottenham since January 1 have certainly harmed their prospects of qualifying for European action.
It's still a vast improvement on last season, when they narrowly escaped relegation with a paltry 35 points, but they will be wanting a strong finish as they bid to hang on to prize asset Jack Grealish ahead of expected summer transfer interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Who is Aston Villa's highest paid player?
Jack Grealish is Villa's highest paid player by some distance, with a weekly salary of £120,000 ($164,500) according to Spotrac, an online sports team and player contract website. That's an annual salary of £6,240,000.
The 25-year-old Grealish joined Villa at the age of six, and made his debut in May 2014. In September 2020, the England international signed a new five-year contract, running until 2025, and elevating him to be top earner at the Midlands club.

Khalfan Mubarak
The Al Jazira playmaker has for some time been tipped for stardom within UAE football, with Quique Sanchez Flores, his former manager at Al Ahli, once labelling him a “genius”. He was only 17. Now 23, Mubarak has developed into a crafty supplier of chances, evidenced by his seven assists in six league matches this season. Still to display his class at international level, though.
Rayan Yaslam
The Al Ain attacking midfielder has become a regular starter for his club in the past 15 months. Yaslam, 23, is a tidy and intelligent player, technically proficient with an eye for opening up defences. Developed while alongside Abdulrahman in the Al Ain first-team and has progressed well since manager Zoran Mamic’s arrival. However, made his UAE debut only last December.
Ismail Matar
The Al Wahda forward is revered by teammates and a key contributor to the squad. At 35, his best days are behind him, but Matar is incredibly experienced and an example to his colleagues. His ability to cope with tournament football is a concern, though, despite Matar beginning the season well. Not a like-for-like replacement, although the system could be adjusted to suit.

Closing the loophole on sugary drinks
As The National reported last year, non-fizzy sugared drinks were not covered when the original tax was introduced in 2017. Sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, 20 grams of sugar per 500ml bottle.
The non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.
Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.
Flavoured water, long-life fruit juice concentrates, pre-packaged sweetened coffee drinks fall under the ‘sweetened drink’ category
Not taxed:
Freshly squeezed fruit juices, ground coffee beans, tea leaves and pre-prepared flavoured milkshakes do not come under the ‘sweetened drink’ band.
