Goals wins game, as the old adage goes, so perhaps it's no surprise to see strikers picking up bonanza pay packets in the Premier League.

David de Gea topped the Premier League wages chart last season, but does the Manchester United goalkeeper still take home the most pay?

Above is a photo gallery of the highest-paid players in the Premier League and their weekly salaries for the 2020/21 season, according to Spotrac, an online sports team and player contract website.

You can also scroll down to see a summary of the top 10 highest paid Premier League forwards and the full list of the 77 highest paid players, ranked in order.

Who is the Premier League's highest paid forward?

Gareth Bale is by far the best-paid player in the Premier League, with the Tottenham Hotspur forward earning a weekly salary of £600,000 a week, according to Spotrac, an online sports team and player contract website.

The Wales international is on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, with Tottenham reported to be paying as much as half of his salary with the Spanish club.

The full list of the Premier League's 78 highest paid strikers/forwards:

1. Gareth Bale

Tottenham Hotspur, on loan from Real Madrid, £600,00 (per week). Tottenham reportedly pay as much as half of Bale's weekly wages.

2. Raheem Sterling

Manchester City, £300,000. The English forward has scored more than 100 goals for City since joining from Liverpool in 2015.

3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal, £250,000. The Gabon star signed a bumper new three-year contract with the Gunners in September 2020.

4. Anthony Martial

Manchester United, £250,000. The French forward has made more than 250 United appearances since joining from Monaco as a teenager in 2015.

5. Sergio Aguero

Manchester City, £230,135. City's record goalscorer has endured an injury and Covid-hit campaign.

6. Edinson Cavani

Manchester United, £210,000. Signed on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain after seven trophy-laden years at the French club.

7. Mohamed Salah

Liverpool, £200,000. The Egyptian has been a sensation on Merseyside since joining from Roma in 2017, helping Liverpool win the Champions League and Premier League.

8. Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur, £200,000. Only Jimmy Greaves is ahead of Kane in the list of Spurs' all-time goalscorers now. Few would bet against the Englishman surpassing Greaves' total of 220.

9. Marcus Rashford

Manchester United, £200,000. The England striker is known as much now for his political activism, helping to feed hungry children in the UK, as he is for his goalscoring exploits.

10. Willian

Arsenal, £192,308. The Brazilian signed a three-year contract with the Gunners after leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

11. Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal, £182,063. The Frenchman has scored more than 50 goals since his big-money move from Lyon in 2017 despite being in and out of the side under a succession of managers.

12. Roberto Firmino

Liverpool, £180,000. The Brazilian forward is part of Liverpool's 'Fab three' frontline alongside Salah and Sadio Mane.

13. Timo Werner

Chelsea, £170,000. Much was expected of the Germany international after a prolific spell at RB Leipzig. Has struggled after a promising start in West London, though.

14. Christian Pulisic

Chelsea, £158,654. Enjoyed a superb end to the 2019/20 campaign but injury has hampered his playing time this term.

15. Nicolas Pepe

Arsenal, £140,000. The Ivorian is Arsenal's record transfer at €79 million but has failed to live up to that lofty price tag so far.

16. Jamie Vardy

Leicester City, £140,000. The prolific striker has scored more than 100 Premier League goals for Leicester in the Premier League.

17. Son Heung-min

Tottenham Hotspur, £140,000. The highest-scoring South Korean in Premier League history. Has formed a formidable partnership with Kane.

18. Wilfried Zaha

Crystal Palace, £130,000. The Eagles' talisman is enjoying one of his most prolific campaigns in the Premier League.

19. Callum Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea, £120,000. Made a promising start to life in the top tier before suffering an Achilles injury that sidelined him for months. Starting to show his true form again.

20. Christian Benteke

Crystal Palace, £120,000. The big Belgian often finds himself playing second fiddle to other strikers at Selhurst Park.

21. Bernard

Everton, £120,000. The Brazil winger has failed to cement a regular place at Goodison since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018.

22. Andriy Yarmolenko

West Ham, £115,000. The Ukraine forward often cuts a frustrated figure warming the West Ham bench.

23. Olivier Giroud

Chelsea, £110,000. French striker proved he can still operate at the top level with four goals in one Champions League match against Sevilla.

24. Sadio Mane

Liverpool, £100,000. The Senegalese is arguably the Reds' most polished finisher and his combination with full-back Andrew Robertson the best in the league.

25. Jarrod Bowen

West Ham, £96,154. Has made the jump from Championship to Premier League look effortless and is one of the league's best wide attacking players.

26. Diogo Jota

Liverpool, £90,385. The Portuguese began his Anfield career with a bang with nine goals in 17 appearances before injury sidelined him.

27. Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal, £90,000. Arsenal's scouts spotted the talented forward playing in the third tier of Brazilian football before recommending him to the London club in 2019. Has shown only glimpses of his potential thus far.

28. Gabriel Jesus

Manchester City, £90,000. Has has to be patient behind the prolific Aguero but the Brazilian has shown he is more than capable of filling the Argentine's boots.

29. Michy Batshuayi

Chelsea (on loan at Crystal Palace), £90,000. The Belgian has never found a settled home at Chelsea and is on his fourth loan move in three years.

30. Richarlison

Everton, £90,000. A full Brazil international, Richarlison has formed an excellent understanding with Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season.

31. James Rodriguez

Everton, £90,000. The Colombian's range of passing and dead-ball ability has made him a fan favourite at Goodison.

32. Joelinton

Newcastle, £86,538. Often derided by his own fans, the big-money Brazilian has scored a paltry three goals since joining at the start of the 2019/20 season.

33. Lucas Moura

Tottenham, £80,000. Will forever be loved by Spurs fans for his hat-trick against Ajax that sent them to a first Champions League final in 2019.

34. Fabio Silva

Wolves, £80,000. Moved to Molineux for a reported club record £35 million at the start of the campaign despite making only a handful of appearances for Porto. The 18-year-old is very much one for the future.

35. Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa, £75,000. Has carried Championship form up to England's top tier and could be a dark horse to make England's Euro 2021 squad.

36. Takumi Minamino

Liverpool (on loan at Southampton), £75,000. Found breaking up Liverpool's 'Fab three' a tough nut to crack but is flourishing down on the South Coast.

37. Andy Carroll

Newcastle, £75,000. The tall Englishman is usually a last resort off the bench when Newcastle are chasing a game.

38. Danny Ings

Southampton, £75,000. Has established himself as one of the best finishers in the Premier League since leaving Liverpool in 2019. The England international averages just over a goal every other game for the Saints.

39. Steven Bergwijn

Tottenham, £73,077. The Dutchman has failed to replicate his early performances after moving to North London in January 2020 from PSV.

40. Michail Antonio

West Ham, £70,000. Established himself as an out-and-out striker after stints in defence and on the wing. One of the hardest working forwards around.

41. Connor Wickham

Crystal Palace, £60,000. The injury-hit striker has made only 50 appearances in six years at Selhurst Park, scoring just 11 goals.

42. Cenk Tosun

Everton (on loan at Besiktas), £60,000. The Turkey international has returned to his homeland on loan after finding his chances at Goodison limited.

43. Ivan Cavaleiro

Fulham, £60,000. He may find goals hard to come by but few strikers put in the same work rate as the Portuguese.

44. Aleksandar Mitrovic

Fulham, £60,000. The stock Serb has been given largely a watching brief since Fulham's promotion back to the Premier League.

45. Kelechi Iheanacho

Leicester City, £60,000. The Nigerian has proved a useful backup to Jamie Vardy when called upon.

46. Shane Long

Southampton (on loan at Bournemouth), £60,000. Once scored the fastest goal in Premier League history but has found himself surplus to requirements at Southampton.

47. Tammy Abraham

Chelsea, £57,692. The big-money arrival of Werner appears to have knocked Abraham off his stride. Has scored goals both domestically and in the Champions League and must now prove to new Blues coach Thomas Tuchel he is worthy of a starting spot.

48. Rodrigo

Leeds United, £57,692. The Spain international has often found himself operating in a deeper role due to Patrick Bamford's impressive form.

49. Neal Maupay

Brighton, £50,000. Brighton are a more mobile side with the French striker leading the line.

50. Danny Welbeck

Brighton, £50,000. Injuries have curtailed what once looked a hugely promising career but 30-year-old has impressed during his short time at the Amex.

51. Chris Wood

Burnley, £50,000. The giant New Zealand striker embodies the fighting spirit Sean Dyche demands of his Burnley players.

52. Alex Iwobi

Everton, £50,000. Asked to fulfil a wing-back role under Carlo Ancelotti and the Nigerian has responded well to the task.

53. Pedro Neto

Wolves, £50,000. The Portugal international, like most of his teammates, has seen his form suffer since the loss of talisman Raul Jimenez to injury.

54. Divock Origi

Liverpool, £49,500. The most used sub in Premier League history has a penchant for scoring important goals.

55. Ferran Torres

Manchester City, £46,154. Has played several roles including false 9 since moving from Valencia. Yet to truly hit his straps for City.

56. Callum Wilson

Newcastle, £46,154. Steve Bruce does not get enough credit for identifying and signing the England striker from Bournemouth to solve Newcastle's goal problems. Has already reached double figures in terms of goals and will be key to their survival hopes.

57. Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal, £45,000. Has repaid Mikel Arteta's faith in him with a string of fine performances in defence, midfield and attack.

58. Bobby Decordova-Reid

Fulham, £45,000. The Jamaican has chipped in with crucial goals as Fulham make a fist of trying to avoid relegation back to the Championship.

59. Ayoze Perez

Leicester, £45,000. The Spaniard has found his place under threat with the emergence of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes.

60. Adama Traore

Wolves, £43,000. A flying winger built like a heavyweight boxer. Traore is one of the hardest wide players to contain in the top flight.

61. Miguel Almiron

Newcastle, £42,327. A much-improved player from the timid forward who first arrived on Tyneside in January 2019.

62. Raul Jimenez

Wolves, £41,231. A sickening clash of heads with Arsenal's David Luiz left the Mexican with a fractured skull. Wolves have found his absence hard to fill.

63. Ashley Barnes

Burnley, £40,000. Converted the penalty that inflicted Liverpool's first home defeat in the league in more than four years.

64. Dwight Gayle

Newcastle, £40,000. Largely underused at Newcastle despite a fairly impressive goalscoring record at the club.

65. Wesley

Aston Villa, £35,000. Still recovering from knee surgery but the one-time Brazil cap has hardly uprooted any trees in the Midlands.

66. Jay Rodriguez

Burnley, £35,000. Hard-working English forward who jostles for a place alongside Wood with Barnes and Matej Vydra.

67. Matej Vydra

Burnley, £35,000. Seven goals in three years tells its own story for the Czech international.

68. Patrick Bamford

Leeds, £35,000. A decent shout for player of the year. Bamford has confounded critics who said he couldn't score at this level by reaching double figures in Leeds' first season back in the top flight.

69. Mason Greenwood

Manchester United, £35,000. Form seems to have suffered since being sent home by Gareth Southgate for breaking Covid protocol on England duty.

70. Jordan Ayew

Crystal Palace, £32,500. The Ghanaian is the perfect foil for the pace and skill of Zaha.

71. Che Adams

Southampton, £28,846. Has found goals hard to come by but his physical attributes give defenders plenty of problems.

72. David McGoldrick

Sheffield United, £28,846. At 33 McGoldrick is in the twilight of his career but gives his all every performance.

73. Rhian Brewster

Sheffield United, £27,500. Chris Wilder shelled out a club record to buy the Liverpool graduate. Brewster has found the Premier League hard going but no doubt has a bright future ahead of him.

74. Lys Mousset

Sheffield United, £25,000. Another Blades striker who has found the goal trail about as out of reach as the holy grail.

75. Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton, £24,000. Reinvented under Ancelotti. Calvert-Lewin has established as one of the league's best centre-forwards under the Italian.

76. Said Benrahma

West Ham, £23,077. Made his loan to the Hammers permanent after a string of impressive performances.

77. Oliver McBurnie

Sheffield United, £20,000. The Scotland international completes Sheffield United's list of non-scoring strikers.

Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.

Band Aid

Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
