Roberto Martinez has left Everton following Wednesday night’s 3-0 defeat at Sunderland, the club have confirmed.
The 42-year-old Spaniard, who replaced David Moyes as manager in 2013, had faced mounting calls for his departure after a run of just one win in their last 10 games.
And Everton announced on their official Twitter feed: “Everton Football Club regrets to announce that Roberto Martinez has left his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect.”

The statement continued on the club’s official website: “The chairman and the board of directors would like to place on record their thanks for the dedication and commitment Roberto has shown during his three seasons with the club.
“Roberto has been a great ambassador for the club, conducting himself, at all times, with the utmost integrity and dignity. He secured the club its highest ever Premier League points total, a place in the last 16 of the Europa League and appearances in both domestic cup semi-finals.
“He has also played a key role in the development of several young players, managing their progression to the Everton first team and international honours.”
However, Martinez had faced mounting criticism over his tactics during the current campaign, as well as the form of big-name stars such as Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and John Stones.
And the defeat at the Stadium of Light, which also guaranteed Sunderland’s top-flight safety, effectively rendered Martinez’s position untenable.
In one last show of defiance, Martinez had insisted after the Sunderland game his players were “100 per cent” behind him, and brushed off questions over his future.
But such was the extent of his side’s shambolic display in the north-east – coming four days after an equally poor defeat at Leicester City – it was clear the club’s board, including new majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, would act.
The timing of Martinez’s departure will inevitably fuel speculation over a move for Frank de Boer, who announced he was leaving his role as Ajax coach on Thursday morning.
Outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and former manager David Moyes have also already been installed among the favourites to succeed Martinez at Goodison Park.
It was not immediately clear who would lead Everton in their final match of the season against relegated Norwich at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Martinez joined Everton in 2013 after leading Wigan Athletic to an unlikely FA Cup triumph, and took them to 11th place in his first season in charge.
But a testing campaign slumped to a new low in a 4-0 derby defeat to Liverpool last month, and an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United all but ended any hopes Martinez had of retaining his role beyond the summer.
Fans had been planning to protest at the club’s scheduled Player of the Year dinner in Liverpool on Thursday, but their calls for Martinez’s dismissal have now been heard.
Everton later confirmed that the club’s end-of-season awards dinner, scheduled for St George’s Hall in Liverpool on Thursday night, have been postponed.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.
What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
