Pep Guardiola has insisted that it will not be a disaster if Manchester City do not win the Champions League this season.
The European Cup is the one prize to elude Guardiola, who did a domestic Treble last year, during his time in England.
He became a Champions League winner as a Barcelona player in 1992 and as manager in 2009 and 2011, but while a third triumph as a coach would allow him to equal the record of Bob Paisley, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane, Guardiola says he is satisfied with his lot.
And he said that City chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano never set him the target of conquering Europe.
He said: “I’m not going to live the next 10 months thinking that if I don’t win the Champions League it will be a disaster in my life. My life is quite good. I’d be happier if we won it but [not] with my private life.
“I want to win it but if I don’t win I’m not going to kill myself, promise. In my first press conference here, it was the same question, you are here to win the Champions League.
"I said I spoke to Ferran and Khaldoon and they didn’t tell me that. They told me I was here to continue the project, to carry on what [Manuel] Pellegrini has done, to try to win one game and then another and see how far we get.”
Guardiola also used his former club as an example of how difficult the Champions League is to win.
“Sometimes you take a few years and sometimes you take one year,” he said. “Barcelona is my club in my heart and 1992 the first one and Barcelona was born a long time ago. They have been in it every season since they were born.”
City have reached the quarter-finals in successive seasons under Guardiola and he would prefer to have consistent qualification rather than one fine campaign followed by regular failure.
“We are making steps as a club,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to arrive once in the final then disappear for five years.”
Many of City’s match-going supporters would prefer to retain the Premier League and Guardiola believes they have to persuade supporters of the Champions League’s merits.
“I know for the fans the Premier League is most exciting,” he said. “That’s a reality of our club, we have to accept it. We are going to try and seduce our fans and say ‘we can do it.’ The only way to seduce them is winning games and playing good.
“I think it’s because in the past, the old generation were not there. Liverpool and [Manchester] United are used to being there. We were in the bars, watching Liverpool and United. That’s the culture of the club but I know how special this competition is.”
City host Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday in the battle of Group C’s two early winners. The Croatian champions sprang a surprise by beating Atalanta, who finished third in Serie A, 4-0 two weeks ago and Guardiola said: “Italy is a tough, tough league and they managed to beat them 4-0. It is a warning. We say, ‘be careful, guys’.”
Guardiola believes Rodri offers City another option at centre-back in the absence of the injured Aymeric Laporte and John Stones. “He can play there,” he said of the summer signing.
The Spaniard, a summer signing from Atletico Madrid, said he has had to adapt to being used as a lone defensive midfielder but feels it is simpler because it is a role Guardiola used to play himself.
“I never used to play this position but we play with lots of offensive players and not many defensive,” Rodri said. “It is easier for me to understand what he teaches me. I know football has changed but he has the same experience I live so he can translate his ideas to me.”
Guardiola’s assistant Mikel Arteta is another former defensive midfielder, as is Atletico manager Diego Simeone, and City hope to profit from Rodri’s past coaching.
“Mikel and I know it more than a winger’s position,” said Guardiola. “I never make a dribble in my career. I am pretty sure we will benefit from Rodri’s work with Simeone.”

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

How Filipinos in the UAE invest
A recent survey of 10,000 Filipino expatriates in the UAE found that 82 per cent have plans to invest, primarily in property. This is significantly higher than the 2014 poll showing only two out of 10 Filipinos planned to invest.
Fifty-five percent said they plan to invest in property, according to the poll conducted by the New Perspective Media Group, organiser of the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition. Acquiring a franchised business or starting up a small business was preferred by 25 per cent and 15 per cent said they will invest in mutual funds. The rest said they are keen to invest in insurance (3 per cent) and gold (2 per cent).
Of the 5,500 respondents who preferred property as their primary investment, 54 per cent said they plan to make the purchase within the next year. Manila was the top location, preferred by 53 per cent.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

Strait of Hormuz
Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.
The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.
Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.
Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.

Du Plessis, 34, who has led his country in two World T20 campaigns, in 2014 and 2016, is keen to play a third but will then step aside.
"The T20 World Cup in 2020 is something I'm really looking forward to. I think right now that will probably be the last tournament for me," he said in Brisbane ahead of a one-off T20 against Australia on Saturday.
