Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge will not join up with England for qualifiers as Jonjo Shelvey and Nathaniel Clyne called up

BASEL, Switzerland // Daniel Sturridge will not join up with England for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers after England manager Roy Hodgson and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers reached an agreement over the striker’s fitness.

It had been thought Hodgson might force the issue and select Sturridge but Rodgers said after Wednesday's disappointing 1-0 Champions League defeat to Basel, in Switzerland, he had spoken with the England coach and resolved the problem.

“I spoke to Roy today and the agreement will be that he will not meet up with England - we are not sure if Danny will be fit for the weekend,” said Rodgers.

“For this moment he will not be in the squad and for now for Daniel it’s about getting up to speed and being ready to play for us.”

Sturridge, 25, has missed five matches since suffering a thigh strain while on England duty last month and was not selected for the Basel game.

Hodgson is due to announce his squad for this month’s matches with San Marino and Estonia on Thursday, with the two qualifiers the only chance England captain Wayne Rooney has to play this month.

The 28-year-old will not feature for Manchester United again until November, having received a straight red card and three-match ban for recklessly kicking out at Stewart Downing in Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Ham.

“Obviously we got away with it by getting the win, but I am really gutted that I am going to be missing the next three games,” Rooney said. “It is hard to take and I am obviously gutted.

“It helps that the England games are coming up, and the training here is really good,” the forward added.

“It is tough and it is getting my fitness up there, so I just have to make sure I train well and be ready for when I come back.”

Uncapped Southampton right back Nathaniel Clyne and Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey were on Thursday called up for England’s 2016 European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

Clyne, who scored a stunning goal against Arsenal in the League Cup recently, has never previously been called up, while Shelvey has made one previous appearance, coincidentally against San Marino, in October 2012.

“He’s impressed us for quite a while,” England manager Roy Hodgson said of 23-year-old Clyne.

“Even before the World Cup, he was a name we were constantly considering, but of course there were other people we considered to be in front of him.

“Now we’ve lost Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker (to injury) -- John Stones played there the other day -- and we were looking for someone else who we thought could be a very interesting candidate for the right back post.

“This time he was not only considered, but asked to come.”

On Shelvey, who Hodgson previously coached at Liverpool, the manager said: “The way we’re looking to play could suit him.

“He’s had an excellent start to the season with Swansea and he’s there on merit, because of his form and because of his qualities.”

Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs returned to the squad.

Manchester United left back Luke Shaw and Arsenal defender Calum Chambers were included in England’s Under-21 squad for their forthcoming 2015 European Championship play-off against Croatia.

Having won 2-0 away to Switzerland in their opening Group E game last month, England host minnows San Marino at Wembley Stadium next Thursday before tackling Estonia in Tallinn the following Sunday.
