Part of the allure was the ridiculous amount of talent on the pitch but a huge part was the way footballers now began to carry themselves.
Just as everything beautiful about the way the game is played today can be traced back to Johan Cruyff, everything that is beautiful about today's players - from tattoo overkill to a different hairstyle each week, can be traced back to David Beckham.
Beckham belonged on both the wing at Old Trafford and catwalk in Milan. The best passer of his generation as well as the best poser. The man who made wearing sarongs to a restaurant instead of to a beach acceptable (sort of). A style icon that would sport a crop, curtains, braids and baldness all in the same month.
But while a trendsetter and trailblazer, Beckham was far from the only Premier League footballer to test out some daring styles.
