Bayern Munich great Robert Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller's 49-year-old German league record by scoring his 41st Bundesliga goal of the season on Saturday.
Lewandowski scored in the 90th-minute of Bayern's 5-2 victory over Augsburg to better Muller's record of 40 that was set in the 1971-72 season.
The Poland striker is second on the all-time scorers' list in the Bundesliga, with 277 goals, and is behind only Muller's tally of 365.
Lewandowski missed many scoring opportunities and looked set to miss out on the record. But he capitalised in the final minute, when keeper Rafal Gikiewicz spilled a Leroy Sane shot and the forward scored.
“I’d have preferred to have scored earlier,” the striker said.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland scored twice as his team beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 to finish the season in third position.
The Norwegian put the hosts in front five minutes into the match, and scored his 27th league goal six minutes from time.
After the early goal, Leverkusen managed to come back but six minutes after the restart Dortmund captain Marc Reus scored with a free-kick.
Lars Bender scored with an 89th-minute penalty for Leverkusen in the former Germany international's final game before retiring.
It was also a happy note to end the season for interim Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, who took over midway through the season and helped them secure a Champions League spot. Terzic, 38, makes way for Marco Rose next season, but there is no dearth of suitors for him.
Also, Werder Bremen were relegated to the second division while Union Berlin qualified for Europe for the first time.
Bremen lost 4-2 at home to Rose's Borussia Monchengladbach and got relegated after Sebastiaan Bornauw scored a late winner for Cologne to beat Schalke 1-0.
Max Kruse scored for Union to beat Leipzig 2-1 and clinch seventh place and qualify for Uefa’s new Europa Conference League next season.

Country-size land deals
US interest in purchasing territory is not as outlandish as it sounds. Here's a look at some big land transactions between nations:
Louisiana Purchase
If Donald Trump is one who aims to broker "a deal of the century", then this was the "deal of the 19th Century". In 1803, the US nearly doubled in size when it bought 2,140,000 square kilometres from France for $15 million.
Florida Purchase Treaty
The US courted Spain for Florida for years. Spain eventually realised its burden in holding on to the territory and in 1819 effectively ceded it to America in a wider border treaty.
Alaska purchase
America's spending spree continued in 1867 when it acquired 1,518,800 km2 of Alaskan land from Russia for $7.2m. Critics panned the government for buying "useless land".

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
