Al Nasr request President's Cup final be replayed due to 'serious errors'

Al Nasr have requested the President’s Cup final be replayed following what the club perceived to be “serious errors in refereeing” in Sunday’s defeat to Shabab Al Ahli.

The Dubai side were beaten 2-1 in UAE football's showpiece fixture at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, with both Shabab Al Ahli's goals coming via penalties.

The spot-kicks, each converted by Federico Cartabia, were each awarded after referee Ammar Al Junaibi consulted his pitchside monitor, with Nasr contesting what they believed to be hugely contentious decisions.

Following the first award, when Al Junaibi ruled Carlos Eduardo had been fouled as he challenged for a high ball, Nasr manager Ramon Diaz was sent to the stands for placing his hand on a touchline official.

The second penalty was given in the final minute, when Mohammed Ayed appeared to catch Eduardo slightly as he received the ball, allowing Shabab Al Ahli to snatch a winner and be crowned President’s Cup winners for a record-equalling 10th time. Nasr, who equalised with 12 minutes remaining, also had an appeal for a penalty waved away in the first half.

In a club statement released late on Tuesday, Nasr said: “Based on its responsibilities and keenness to preserve the rights of its fans, players, and technical and administrative bodies, and in an effort to keep Emirati football in its best form, Al Nasr Football Club submitted a formal complaint today, May 18, 2021, to the Disciplinary Committee of the Football Association about the disastrous events which occurred during the President’s Cup final for the sports season 2021/2020.

“Al Nasr demanded, in terms of the result, to repeat the match because of a technical legal error, which requires a replay in accordance with the relevant regulations and demanded to compensate the club for the damage they suffered after missing out on striking a result [win] due to the serious errors in refereeing in the match.”

The Football Association has yet to comment on Nasr’s appeal.

So what is Spicy Chickenjoy?

Just as McDonald’s has the Big Mac, Jollibee has Spicy Chickenjoy – a piece of fried chicken that’s crispy and spicy on the outside and comes with a side of spaghetti, all covered in tomato sauce and topped with sausage slices and ground beef. It sounds like a recipe that a child would come up with, but perhaps that’s the point – a flavourbomb combination of cheap comfort foods. Chickenjoy is Jollibee’s best-selling product in every country in which it has a presence.

Virtual banks explained

What is a virtual bank?

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority defines it as a bank that delivers services through the internet or other electronic channels instead of physical branches. That means not only facilitating payments but accepting deposits and making loans, just like traditional ones. Other terms used interchangeably include digital or digital-only banks or neobanks. By contrast, so-called digital wallets or e-wallets such as Apple Pay, PayPal or Google Pay usually serve as intermediaries between a consumer’s traditional account or credit card and a merchant, usually via a smartphone or computer.

What’s the draw in Asia?

Hundreds of millions of people under-served by traditional institutions, for one thing. In China, India and elsewhere, digital wallets such as Alipay, WeChat Pay and Paytm have already become ubiquitous, offering millions of people an easy way to store and spend their money via mobile phone. Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines are also among the world’s biggest under-banked countries; together they have almost half a billion people.

Is Hong Kong short of banks?

No, but the city is among the most cash-reliant major economies, leaving room for newcomers to disrupt the entrenched industry. Ant Financial, an Alibaba Group Holding affiliate that runs Alipay and MYBank, and Tencent Holdings, the company behind WeBank and WeChat Pay, are among the owners of the eight ventures licensed to create virtual banks in Hong Kong, with operations expected to start as early as the end of the year.
