N’Golo Kante (Werner, 75) N/A – Sat in the middle to close out the game and looked solid, though could have made the game safe when he had a good shooting position, the Frenchman instead opting to pass. AP
SHEFFIELD UNITED RATINGS: Aaron Ramsdale 5 – Could do little about the opening goal, such was its quality, but ultimately it was his foul that lead to the penalty for Chelsea’s second. Reuters
Chris Basham 7 – Basham was superb. He made an excellent recovery challenge when the ball was played through by Kovacic to unleash Werner. He also thought he’d earned the home side a penalty, but Burke was adjudged to have been offside. EPA
John Egan 6 – Had a solid game and kept Olivier Giroud quiet to the extent that the Frenchman was forced off in the second half. AP
Kean Bryan 6 – Made a number of timely challenges, including a great block to deny Mason Mount in the first half when he threw his body on the line. Unfortunately, though, it was his back pass that caused Ramsdale to come out and foul Werner. Reuters
Jayden Bogle 7 – Looked good at both ends of the pitch. At one point, he made a key intervention to deny Chilwell a header on goal. At the other end, he was a constant danger when attacking on the right. AP
John Lundstram 6 – Worked hard as part of Sheffield United’s press and was always busy off the ball. PA
Oliver Norwood 7 – The midfielder was key when it came to stopping Chelsea’s supply line to Mount and Giroud. Worked tirelessly without the ball. PA
John Fleck 6 – Like his midfield colleagues, he worked tirelessly throughout and, on one occasion, he beat a number of Chelsea players to get into the box in search of an equaliser. PA
Max Lowe 6 – His presence on the left stopped Reece James from getting forward on more occasions, and he got into some decent attacking positions himself. PA
Oliver Burke 7 – He had the first chance of the game and would probably have done better had he gone across Mendy, but instead he fired into the side netting at the near post. His pressure on Rudiger also lead to the equaliser. AP
Oli McBurnie 6 – Was a strong focal point of Sheffield United’s attack and caused Christensen and Rudiger issues with his presence. AFP
SUBS: David McGoldrick (Burke, 62) 6 – Worked hard and showed a great eye for a pass, but couldn’t make the impact needed. AFP
Billy Sharp (Bryan, 68) 5 – Came on to find an equaliser but was kept quiet by Andreas Christensen. EPA
Rhian Brewster (Norwood, 86) N/A – The last throw of the dice by Chris Wilder, had two shots blocked by Rudiger. EPA
CHELSEA RATINGS: Edouard Mendy 6 – The Senegalese goalkeeper made a key save late on, but he watched his chances of an 11th clean sheet disappear when Rudiger’s back pass sneaked past him. AP
Cesar Azpilicueta 5 – The skipper looked solid in the middle but he was often wasteful when he got into the opposing half. AP
Andreas Christensen 6 – Solid in the middle but didn’t command the same air of authority as Thiago Silva, the player he came in to replace. That said, he did well to keep Billy Sharp quiet in the last half hour. EPA
Antonio Rudiger 6 – Had a shocker when his back pass slipped past Mendy to level the scores – and concede the first goal of the Thomas Tuchel era. However, he recovered well to make two key blocks late on. Reuters
Reece James 6 – Looked as solid as ever on the right and though his forward forays were restricted, he always gave Chelsea an option. Solid in his defensive duties. EPA
Jorginho 6 – Scored his second goal in four days and took his penalty well, but the Italian was sometimes beaten too easily in the centre of the park. PA
Mateo Kovacic 6 – Breaks down opposing attacks well and is a key player in the middle, but he needs to work on his final ball in the attacking third of the pitch. AP
Ben Chilwell 7 – Looked good going forward but will have breathed a huge sigh of relief when his foul on Basham in the box was ruled inconsequential as a result of an offside. Getty
Mason Mount 8 – Had a really bright first half in an attacking position, his movement not only breaking the lines but leading to the opening goal, which he finished with aplomb. Reuters
Olivier Giroud 4 – A poor game from the Frenchman who looked unconvincing leading the line. He dropped deeper to try and get involved but was anonymous for much of the game. AP
Timo Werner 8 – The German’s attacking runs caused the home side problems and his movement played a part in both Chelsea goals. A much-needed positive performance. PA
SUBS: Marcos Alonso (Chilwell, 62) 6 – Played well on the left and was often found drifting inside in the false 9 position. Getty
Callum Hudson-Odoi (Giroud, 62) 7 – Stretched the home defence after coming on but looked as adept defending as he did in the attacking third. AFP
