Spain clinched a record fourth title as they outclassed England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday.
Substitute Cole Palmer gave England hope with superb finish in the 73rd minute in reply to Nico Williams' 47th-minute opener, but it was another replacement, Mikel Oyazabal, who sealed the victory for Spain four minutes from time.
The victory was a record-breaking fourth crown for La Roja, who also won the tournament in 1964, 2008 and 2012.
The win means Spain moved ahead of Germany with both countries having sealed three titles going into the match. The tournament also saw Luis de la Fuente's side win all seven of their matches – also a record.
The defeat, England's second consecutive loss in a European Championship final after they were beaten on penalties by Italy last time out, means the Three Lions' 58-year wait for a second major trophy, after their 1966 World Cup win, goes on.
England manager Gareth Southgate said after the game that he was undecided about his future.
Southgate's current contract runs out in December and it is unclear whether he will sign an extension that would see him lead the team into the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.
“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I’m going to talk to the right people," Southgate told ITV. “It’s just not for now.”
He added: “I think England are in a really good position in terms of the experiences they’ve got now, the age of the squad. Most of this squad are going to be around not just for the World Cup but the next Euros as well. There’s a lot to look forward to but at this moment that’s not any consolation.”
Southgate has been England manager since 2016 and has taken them to two European Championship finals and the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, as well as the quarter-finals in 2022.
England record goalscorer Harry Kane's wait for a major trophy also goes on.
The England captain, who was replaced by Ollie Watkins after 60 minutes of the final, was in tears at the end of the match.
Kane has scored 66 times for his country and was the Bundesliga's top marksman, netting 36 league goals for Bayern Munich in his first season in German football following his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur.
But, despite their recruitment of Kane for €100 million, Bayern failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2012. Kane spent 14 years at Spurs without winning a major honour.
It was his sixth final for clubs and country without lifting silverware.
Kane said afterwards: "It's hard to put into words how we're all feeling right now.
"These finals aren't easy to get to. You have to take it when it comes and we haven't done it again. It's extremely painful and it'll hurt for a long time."
The striker still walked away with a share of the Golden Boot thanks to his three goals, but that will do little to dull the pain of losing a second European Championship final in three years.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
