SUBS: Gabriel Jesus (Sterling, 60’) – 6. Couldn’t stretch enough to reach Cancelo’s searching ball and saw his header hit the post. Despite not getting on the scoresheet, he had a positive impact for City. PA
SOUTHAMPTON PLAYER RATINGS: Fraser Forster – 8. Authoritative in his goalkeeping and did especially well to deny Sterling. Also impressively palmed away efforts from Rodrigo and Foden, before denying De Bruyne at the very end. AFP
Kyle Walker-Peters – 7. Provided the opener with a brilliant touch and finish for his first Premier League goal, then continued to put in a shift defensively. However, he did nowhere near enough to stop Laporte as he ran in to head home the equaliser. AP
Jan Bednarek – 8. Aggressive in his positioning and decision making, which got him booked for a foul on Grealish after being beaten to the ball, but more importantly helped earn a point. Unlucky to see his header saved but then missed the target with Ederson off the pitch. Reuters
Mohammed Salisu – 9. His performance verged on heroic, epitomised before the break when he made a great tackle on Sterling, then blocked Walker’s cutback. His solid display continued into the second half, when he put his body on the line to block Foden’s shot and halted De Bruyne’s late burst forward. PA
Romain Perraud – 8. His battle against Sterling was an intriguing one. The full-back was lucky after losing him for the guilt-edged chance in the first half but did well to impose himself whether attacking or defending. Also did a good job of dealing with Jesus after the substitution. AP
Nathan Redmond – 7. Made a good run and pass for Walker-Peters’ goal and put in a great shift defensively, doing well to divert the ball away from danger just before De Bruyne reached it. Though he did get away with conceding possession in a dangerous area. AFP
James Ward-Prowse – 7. Showed good early intent by stepping in to cut out Laporte’s pass, and did brilliantly to halt Sterling when City could have countered as he patrolled the midfield area. Also had quality in his delivery. Getty Images
Oriol Romeu – 6. Made a good switch to start the move for Walker-Peters’ goal and was typically disciplined in the middle of the park. Reuters
Stuart Armstrong – 6. Floated into some lovely spaces but couldn’t quite get the ball under control when the opportunity came to counter. Did well to head away a cross seemingly destined to reach Sterling and also started a move that released Broja. Booked for a poor challenge on Laporte. AP
Che Adams – 5. Pressed well throughout but had periods where he struggled to make an impact on the game, even when the ball came his way. AFP
Armando Broja – 7. Used his physicality and worked well in tight spaces at times. Could have had a goal and penalty if he had stayed onside but did superbly to head a ball behind in his own box. He’ll be annoyed that his header at the other end hit the post. AP
SUBS: Mohamed Elyounoussi (Redmond, HT) – 4. Partly due to City’s dominance in the second half, he struggled to make any impact in an attacking sense, even if he did work hard. Booked for an unnecessary foul on De Bruyne after cheaply losing the ball. Getty Images
Lyanco (Bednarek, 71’) – N/R. Continued Bednarek’s aggressive style of defending, rushing out to make a good block and deny Grealish in the latter stages. Couldn’t deliver a quality cross after a good run forward. Getty Images
Ibrahima Diallo (Armstrong, 82’) – N/R. His shot was routinely saved by Ederson and his general play was ponderous at times. AFP
MANCHESTER CITY PLAYER RATINGS: Ederson - 6, There wasn’t a lot he could do for the opening goal, but the goalkeeper was well positioned to stop Bednarek’s header early in the second period. AFP
Kyle Walker – 6. Got up and down the pitch well, especially in the first half, and could have had a brilliant chance if Sterling had found him early on. EPA
Ruben Dias – 6. Often cleaned up well and appeared authoritative at the heart of City’s defence, even if there was nothing he could do for Walker-Peters’ goal. Wasn’t afraid to go high up the pitch to win the ball back EPA
Aymeric Laporte – 7. Some of the Spain international’s passing was off in the first half. He provided an aerial threat in Southampton’s box in the second half and clinically headed in the equaliser. Did well to recover after initially seeing Broja go behind him. Reuters
Joao Cancelo – 6. Played around in the build-up to Walker-Peters’ goal. Showed plenty of intent going forward but sent a shot flying well over the crossbar and couldn’t quite find the final pass. In the first half was unlucky with some balls played towards Jesus. AFP
Rodri – 6. Passed the ball nicely and broke the lines at times. Having scuffed a volley wide, the Spaniard saw a shot from the edge of the box saved and another whistle over the crossbar. EPA
Bernardo Silva – 7. Always urgent and looking to get City moving, moving the ball well throughout. AP
Raheem Sterling – 4. Played a poor pass for Walker that was cut out moments before the opener. While the winger was unlucky to see his shot go over after cutting across Adams, he really should have finished his chance later in the first half. Had a quiet second half before coming off. PA
Kevin De Bruyne – 8. Always looking to make things happen, finding Cancelo with a perfectly weighted pass, as well as delivering crosses that stretched Southampton’s defence, eventually getting the assist for the equaliser. Saw an absolute peach come off the post and forced a save from Forster in the final seconds. AP
Jack Grealish – 6. Took up good positions to create space for himself and showed moments of quality. Thought he was about to score the winner late on, only to see his shot blocked by Lyanco. EPA
Phil Foden – 6. Linked up well with Grealish at times, found Sterling with a brilliant low cross for the squandered chance and showed wonderful technique for a volley that was parried away. However, he should have done more to disrupt Walker-Peters for the goal. EPA
