Mason Greenwood earns Manchester United a draw at Southampton

Mason Greenwood's second-half goal earned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a point at Southampton as Manchester United equalled the top-flight’s longest unbeaten away record.

United did not lose single league game on the road last season and this draw at St Mary's Stadium took their unbeaten league away run to 27 matches, putting them level with Arsenal in 2003/04.

This was the first time the two teams had faced each other since Southampton's humiliating 9-0 capitulation at Old Trafford in February but there was to be no repeat on the south coast on Sunday.

James Ward-Prowse had the first effort of the game when his attempt to catch out David De Gea at the near post from a free-kick needed the Spaniard to palm the shot out for a corner.

United had a chance too when Harry Maguire and Paul Pogba tried to reach a Bruno Fernandes free-kick, with the ball looping onto the bar. Mohammed Salisu blocked Anthony Martial’s follow-up header before impressive teenage full-back Tino Livramento cleared it away.

Saints' summer signing from Blackburn Rovers, Adam Armstrong, curled over the bar from outside the box before the home side took the lead half an hour into the game.

Fernandes was furious that Jack Stephens was not punished for a foul in the build-up but a nice move involving Moussa Djenepo, Armstrong and Che Adams saw the latter's shot take a huge deflection off Fred for the United midfielder's own goal.

Fernandes was booked for arguing with the referee after the goal and Saints then threatened a second, with Livramento superbly bursting down the right only to just overhit a cross.

United dominated at the start of the second half and the equaliser was no surprise. Pogba poked a Fernandes ball on to Greenwood, whose shot beat Alex McCarthy and found the back of the net in front of delighted away fans.

Jadon Sancho replaced Martial and Pogba was soon tormenting the Southampton defence before hitting a left-footed shot across the face of goal.

But it was Armstrong who will be dreaming of what might have been in the 73rd minute. Ward-Prowse took the ball off a dithering Maguire and Adams threaded through Armstrong whose shot was too close to De Gea and the Spanish goalkeeper saved well.

On their amazing record away from Old Trafford, Greenwood said: "We've done well. It's hard coming away from home to play at these away grounds and with the fans back today it makes a difference but hopefully we can go onto the next game and win.

"There's a little bit of disappointment. I think we should have got all three points with a late goal. Southampton did well. They defended well but I think we should have went for it after the equaliser but unfortunately we didn't."

Southampton defender Livramento said: "We knew it was going to be a battle. Man Utd are a massive club and have quality all over the pitch.

"We knew the way we could compete was by being physical and aggressive with the press and hitting them on the counter. I feel we could have won the game, maybe could have lost the game, but a draw is a fair result."
