Lionel Messi will not sign a new contract at Barcelona "due to economic and structural obstacles" and is no longer associated with the club, the Spanish giants announced on Thursday
Messi's previous contract had expired at the end of June and the Argentine forward was expected to agree new terms having agreed to take a 50 per cent pay cut.
However, Barcelona have released a statement confirming Messi will no longer be signing a new deal and has formally left the club.
"Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalised due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations)," the statement read.
"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
"Barca would like to thank with all its heart the player's contribution to the enhancement of the institution and wishes him the best in his personal and professional life."
Messi was free to negotiate a transfer with other clubs after his deal ran out at the end of June, but Barcelona had always maintained he wanted to stay with the club. The 34-year-old was reportedly set to sign a new five-year deal.
To balance the books in order to retain Messi, Barcelona - who have suffered financially during the coronavirus pandemic - were required to move players out and were aiming to use the funds raised towards a new contract for their greatest ever player.
Messi's agreed salary cut would have dropped his annual basic pay from around €45 million ($53.3m) to €20m. In total, Messi earned approximately €138m a year.
Therefore, to keep Messi, Barca would have to reduce their wage bill by around €200m to successfully pass La the Financial Fair Play requirements laid out by La Liga. Barca's total deby currently stands at around €1.173 billion.
The news of Messi's exit also comes a day after La Liga agreed in principle to sell 10 per cent of a newly formed company housing most of its business to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners for €2.7 billion.
Messi had tried to leave Barcelona in August 2020, making a formal request for an exit after a break down in his relationship with then president Josep Maria Bartomeu but successor Joan Laporta, who presided over the Argentine's rise to greatness, convinced him to stay.
The burning question now is where Messi will be playing his football next season. Premier League champions Manchester City had been linked with a move last summer when the Argentine attempted to engineer an exit, but would appear unlikely to make an approach this year as they close in on a deal for England midfielder Jack Grealish in what is expected to be a British transfer record fee.
French giants Paris Saint-Germain, where Messi's former teammate and close friend Neymar plies his trade, would be one of the few clubs who could match his wage demands. A move to the United States and Major League Soccer has also been mooted.
Another pressing concern for Barcelona is how they are going to be able to register the new signings they have made this summer. Messi's international teammate Sergio Aguero, Dutch ofrward Memphis Depay, and Spanish defender Eric Garcia have all arrived on free transfers, but whether Barca have enough in the budget - having been unable to secure Messi's future - remains to be seen.
Messi, who joined Barca's youth set up aged 13, is the club's all-time top scorer and appearance maker with 672 goals in 778 games in all competitions. He has helped Barcelona win 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, seven Copa del Reys, and three Fifa Club World Cups.
He leaves the club just weeks after finally winning a major international trophy with Argentina, whom he led to the Copa America title and was named the player of the tournament.
Types of policy
Term life insurance: this is the cheapest and most-popular form of life cover. You pay a regular monthly premium for a pre-agreed period, typically anything between five and 25 years, or possibly longer. If you die within that time, the policy will pay a cash lump sum, which is typically tax-free even outside the UAE. If you die after the policy ends, you do not get anything in return. There is no cash-in value at any time. Once you stop paying premiums, cover stops.
Whole-of-life insurance: as its name suggests, this type of life cover is designed to run for the rest of your life. You pay regular monthly premiums and in return, get a guaranteed cash lump sum whenever you die. As a result, premiums are typically much higher than one term life insurance, although they do not usually increase with age. In some cases, you have to keep up premiums for as long as you live, although there may be a cut-off period, say, at age 80 but it can go as high as 95. There are penalties if you don’t last the course and you may get a lot less than you paid in.
Critical illness cover: this pays a cash lump sum if you suffer from a serious illness such as cancer, heart disease or stroke. Some policies cover as many as 50 different illnesses, although cancer triggers by far the most claims. The payout is designed to cover major financial responsibilities such as a mortgage or children’s education fees if you fall ill and are unable to work. It is cost effective to combine it with life insurance, with the policy paying out once if you either die or suffer a serious illness.
Income protection: this pays a replacement income if you fall ill and are unable to continue working. On the best policies, this will continue either until you recover, or reach retirement age. Unlike critical illness cover, policies will typically pay out for stress and musculoskeletal problems such as back trouble.

Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. Users can now donate any amount to the Beirut relief with two clicks. The money raised will go towards rebuilding houses for the families that were impacted by the explosion.”

The five stages of early child’s play

1. Solitary Play: This is where Infants and toddlers start to play on their own without seeming to notice the people around them. This is the beginning of play.
2. Onlooker play: This occurs where the toddler enjoys watching other people play. There doesn’t necessarily need to be any effort to begin play. They are learning how to imitate behaviours from others. This type of play may also appear in children who are more shy and introverted.
3. Parallel Play: This generally starts when children begin playing side-by-side without any interaction. Even though they aren’t physically interacting they are paying attention to each other. This is the beginning of the desire to be with other children.
4. Associative Play: At around age four or five, children become more interested in each other than in toys and begin to interact more. In this stage children start asking questions and talking about the different activities they are engaging in. They realise they have similar goals in play such as building a tower or playing with cars.
5. Social Play: In this stage children are starting to socialise more. They begin to share ideas and follow certain rules in a game. They slowly learn the definition of teamwork. They get to engage in basic social skills and interests begin to lead social interactions.
