Yas Marina Circuit had acknowledged the increasing popularity of Max Verstappen ahead of the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by dedicating a section of the Marina Grandstand to his supporters.
His travelling army of Dutch fans were not let down by their compatriot as the Red Bull Racing driver recovered from a slow start to achieve his first podium in the UAE as he finished third behind Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
It was not all plain sailing for the 21 year old, however, as he spent the closing laps of the race unable to see clearly as his helmet visor became covered in oil.
This had come from Pierre Gasly's Toro Rosso, which was having an engine failure when Verstappen came to lap him.
It led to an uncomfortable final few laps and Verstappen conceded he had been concerned he could come under threat from his teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
"It was a bit of oil, I don't know what happened there," Verstappen said.
"I already went through all my tear-offs and there was so much oil on my visor it was like driving through fog, it was horrible.
“I asked the team ‘Where is Daniel as I can’t see him in the mirrors, nothing’.”
Verstappen had been confident that he would be able to mix it with the Mercedes and Ferrari cars in the opening laps.
Starting on the softest of the three Pirelli tyre compounds, the hypersoft, he had anticipated a rapid getaway.
Instead a problem with the engine mode bogged him down and he dropped to 10th on the first lap.
He quickly moved back up the order and would earn his fifth podium finish in a row by passing Mercedes-GP driver Valtteri Bottas in the closing stages.

"It was not an easy race, I had a problem at the start but then my engine went into safety mode and I had it again in the restart afterwards,” he said of his slow start to the race.
"But I managed to go back and put some pressure of the guys ahead and we managed to keep the supersofts [tyres] alive. We had a good pace.”
Verstappen was 12.7 seconds adrift of race winner Hamilton at the end, but he held off Ricciardo, who was in his last race for the Austrian team before he joins Renault in 2019.
Ricciardo said: "I would have loved a podium. I can't be ecstatic with fourth, to be honest. I was a bit lonely the last few laps. I couldn't really do much more."

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
