ABU DHABI // Escape Route will head for the President's Cup as one of the favourites after an eye-catching victory in the Prep race in the capital last night.
Given a well-judged run by Richard Mullen, the American bred six-year-old won by half-a-length from Hopes And Fears, who tried to make all the running under Wayne Smith. Yasood was third.
Gillian Duffield, the champion trainer for purebred Arabians, saddled a treble, taking her tally to six winners for the season.
Her winners were ridden by three different jockeys, Richard Hills and Tadhg O'Shea, carrying the silks of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid, while Ted Durcan rode Jawhara Al Reef in the Al Wathba Stud Farm Cup, a prize exclusively for private owners.
Hills rode Nesnaas to victory in the second race, the Sweihan conditions, and O'Shea, the champion jockey, came with a late run on Abraaj to beat Eric Lemartinel's pair, Raneet and Rakeel, 30 minutes later in the Al Jazeera Handicap.
Nesnaas, the highest rated (107) on the field, won on his first appearance for the season. Hills sent the eight-year-old grey into the lead at the final furlong pole and held off a late challenge from Kieren Fallon on Time Out to win by a quarter-length.
Hills, the retained first jockey for Sheikh Hamdan, completed a double by claiming the penultimate prize on Aqmaar, an impressive winner of the Abu Dhabi Championship Prep, a conditions race for three-year-olds run over the mile distance. The Englishman was last out of the gate but won by two lengths from Masharref, in the second colours of Sheikh Hamdan. Tahani, was a further 25 lengths behind in third.
Lemartinel, who has had eight winners in the last four meetings in Abu Dhabi, took the opener, the Al Bahia Conditions for horses bred in the Emirates, with BH Fatan, ridden by Gerald Avranche.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.
For sale
A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
