The form lines of the Dubai World Cup, Dubai Sheema Classic and Dubai Duty Free will be put to the test in Hong Kong at the end of the month after the final field for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup was revealed yesterday.
Six Dubai World Cup night runners were named in the final line-up for the HK$14 million (Dh6.6m) event, staged at Sha Tin on April 27.
With Group 1 winners entered from Hong Kong, France, Japan and South Africa, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s director of racing was keen to underline the international aspect to the 20th running of race.
“This is what international racing is all about,” William Nader said.
“We have seen some brilliant champions … in the past, but this could be one of the strongest renewals we’ve ever had – it’s shaping up to be a real classic.”
Vercingetorix and Sanshaawes will represent Mike de Kock, as the South African trainer seeks to augment his record of two previous victories in the race.
Vercingetorix, the Jebel Hatta winner, was second to Just A Way in the Dubai Duty Free on March 29, while Sanshaawes ran down the field in the World Cup.
International racing’s evergreen son Cirrus Des Aigles has also made the final cut, having finished second in the Sheema Classic to Gentildonna.
Just A Way and Gentildonna successfully carried the standard for Japan in Dubai and the Land of the Rising Sun is set to send Epiphaneia, the Japanese St Leger winner, and Uncoiled, who has so far found Gentildonna and Just A Way too good at home.
Last year’s winner, Military Attack, and Akeed Mofeed, who spearheaded the Hong Kong assault on the World Cup, will lead the defence of the Group 1 race. They will be joined by Military Attack’s stablemates at John Moore’s yard, Designs On Rome and Dominant.
Tje Hong Kong runners Same World, Packing Whiz, Dibayani and Endowing complete the field.
