GUANGZHOU, China // Displaying flawless technique, Sui Lu of China won two more titles in gymnastics yesterday for a total of four gold medals at the Asian Games.
Sui, 18, soared on the floor exercise and the balance beam, her signature events, winning golds to go with the all-around and team titles she collected earlier in the week. She was the most successful gymnast of the games.
Sui and her Chinese teammates dominated the artistic gymnastics competition throughout the week, winning golds in every event but the vault.
Yang Hak-seon of South Korea took the gold from China in that event. Feng Zhe of China won the silver and Stanislav Valiyev of Kazakhstan took bronze.
Feng, the reigning world champion on the parallel bars, later showed his mastery of that apparatus with a gold medal-winning routine, easily beating Anton Fokin of Uzbekistan and Ildar Valeyev of Kazakhstan.
Zhang gathered another gold medal with a win on the high bar, ahead of Shun Kuwahara of Japan and the all-around champion Teng Haibin of China.
Meanwhile, Yang Shu-chun, the tearful Taiwanese taekwondo competitor, was disqualified from the Games yesterday for using unauthorised footwear, sparking protests from team officials.
The dispute later escalated when Taiwanese journalists harangued officials and sparred with mainland Chinese reporters during a heated news conference in which it was alleged the disqualification was political. The sport's federation, however, denied this.
In action for the UAE yesterday: Sayed al Hashemi and Hussain al Suwaidi finished 15th in the men's doubles Squad A bowling competition.
In the women's 50m rifle 3-positions qualification, Salem al Nuaimi and Shamsa al Marzouqi finished 33rd and 43rd, respectively.
Obaid al Jasmi finished seventh in the men's swimming 200m individual medley and is in the pool again today in the 50m backstroke.
Adil Khalid finished seventh and fifth, respectively, in two races in the open Laser Radial sailing competition. In another sailing event Hamood al Zaidi had finishes of 10th and ninth.
At the velodrome, Badr al Balooshi was eighth in the men's Keirin finals.
In an equestrian event, Farah al Khojai came 13th in the dressage individual Round B.
In table tennis, Rashed Mohamed Hassan was beaten by Yang Zi in the men's singles.
