DOHA // David Rudisha, the 800 metres world record holder, and Abubaker Kaki, his main challenger, dealt the IAAF Diamond League a huge blow yesterday by withdrawing from the first meeting of the year to be held in Doha tomorrow.
Rudisha, the 2010 World Athlete of the Year, is yet to fully recover from a leg injury while double world indoor champion Kaki suffered leg cramps during training.
"I'm very disappointed not to be able to run in Doha, where I've opened my summer racing season for the last four years," Rudisha said. The Kenyan world record holder started 2011 at the Melbourne Track Classic in March, clocking 1min 43.88secs, the fastest in the world this year.
Kaki pulled out due to a problem the Sudanese athlete's team said was discovered when "a leg cramp while training revealed a small muscular injury".
With several top athletes missing Qatar as they bid to peak for the World Championships in Daegu in South Korea later this year, the field looks depleted.
The 100m is not part of the official 16-event meeting but is included as an additional race at the discretion of local organisers. However, the absences of Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay mean it is unlikely to attract the attention of fans.
The men's shot put will now take on more significance with world indoor and outdoor champion Christian Cantwell of the United States facing perennial foes Reese Hoffa and Poland's Tomasz Majewski, the Olympic champion.
Teddy Tamgho, the world and European indoor champion, is the favourite to win the men's triple jump. "I'm extremely happy to come back to Doha," the Frenchman said. "It's here my career really started to progress, so I decided to start my season here. The crowd in Doha at the World Indoor Championships last year was magnificent and I hope to perform well on Friday."
The Doha Diamond League kicks off a 14-meeting season which bridges the August 27 to September 4 World Championships.
This year's event takes part in the 15,000-seat Qatar Sports Club, with the men competing in the 100m, 800m, 5000m, 400m hurdles, high jump, pole vault, triple jump, shot put and javelin.
Women will take part in the 200m, 400m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 100m hurdles, long jump and discus.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Building boom turning to bust as Turkey's economy slows
Deep in a provincial region of northwestern Turkey, it looks like a mirage - hundreds of luxury houses built in neat rows, their pointed towers somewhere between French chateau and Disney castle.
Meant to provide luxurious accommodations for foreign buyers, the houses are however standing empty in what is anything but a fairytale for their investors.
The ambitious development has been hit by regional turmoil as well as the slump in the Turkish construction industry - a key sector - as the country's economy heads towards what could be a hard landing in an intensifying downturn.
After a long period of solid growth, Turkey's economy contracted 1.1 per cent in the third quarter, and many economists expect it will enter into recession this year.
The country has been hit by high inflation and a currency crisis in August. The lira lost 28 per cent of its value against the dollar in 2018 and markets are still unconvinced by the readiness of the government under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to tackle underlying economic issues.
The villas close to the town centre of Mudurnu in the Bolu region are intended to resemble European architecture and are part of the Sarot Group's Burj Al Babas project.
But the development of 732 villas and a shopping centre - which began in 2014 - is now in limbo as Sarot Group has sought bankruptcy protection.
It is one of hundreds of Turkish companies that have done so as they seek cover from creditors and to restructure their debts.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.
