New Zealand beat Pakistan by 123 runs on the final day of the third Test match in Abu Dhabi to win the series 2-1.
Set 280 to win, Pakistan were bowled out at the Zayed Cricket Stadium for 156, with Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel, and William Somerville all taking three wickets each.
Babar Azam (51) was the only Pakistan batsman to produce a significant score, but his task proved thankless as wickets consistently fell at the opposite end.
Mohammad Hafeez (8) was the first to go in his final innings as a Test player following his decision to retire at the end of the series, while Azhar Ali (5), Haris Sohail (9), and Asad Shafiq (0) quickly followed to leave the hosts 43-4.
After opener Imam-ul-Haq fell for 22, Pakistan produced their sternest resistance of the innings when Babar and Sarfraz Ahmed (28) combined for 43 runs, but after the captain was bowled by Somerville, New Zealand closed in on victory.
Bilal Asif (12) was the next to go off the bowling of Southee, before the bowler struck again to remove Yasir Shah (4).
It was then just a matter of time for New Zealand to claim the remaining wickets, and once Babar fell to Patel, it was all but game over. Patel then took the match-winning wicket of Hasan Ali (4) as New Zealand claimed their first Test series win in Asia since 2008 and their first away to Pakistan since 1969.
Earlier, New Zealand had declared on 353-7, after centuries from captain Kane Williamson (139) and Henry Nicholls (126 not out).

Moment of the day When Dilruwan Perera dismissed Yasir Shah to end Pakistan’s limp resistance, the Sri Lankans charged around the field with the fevered delirium of a side not used to winning. Trouble was, they had not. The delivery was deemed a no ball. Sri Lanka had a nervy wait, but it was merely a stay of execution for the beleaguered hosts.
Stat of the day – 5 Pakistan have lost all 10 wickets on the fifth day of a Test five times since the start of 2016. It is an alarming departure for a side who had apparently erased regular collapses from their resume. “The only thing I can say, it’s not a mitigating excuse at all, but that’s a young batting line up, obviously trying to find their way,” said Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach.
The verdict Test matches in the UAE are known for speeding up on the last two days, but this was extreme. The first two innings of this Test took 11 sessions to complete.
