Emirates D10 tournament off to a thrilling start with a tie in Dubai - in pictures

The new Emirates D10 tournament got off to an exciting start at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Friday.

The Emirates Cricket Board Blues were the favourites in their opening match against Dubai Pulse Secure (DPS) despite players just returning from the pandemic-enforced break. After all, their side was brimming with national team players.

But the unpredictability of the 10-over format came to the fore as the match ended in a tie. The Blues posted 126/3 thanks mainly to Vriitya Aravind's scintillating 83 not out from just 29 balls after openers Rohan Mustafa and Chirag Suri fell in the second over.

The Blues must have thought they had enough. But almost all DPS batsmen put pressure on ECB players, who showed signs of rust.

Seamer Mohammad Ayaz bowled the final over, defending 18 runs. He was hit for two boundaries off the first three balls, with the second ball a wide that leaked two extra runs.

The Blues could have secured victory with three needed from the final ball but a sloppy bit of fielding saw the keeper miss a run out chance and allow the opposition to complete two runs and secure a tie.

However, ECB Blues were declared winners on the boundary countback rule, having hit 19 compared to DPS' 15.

The tournament features five teams representing the country's respective cricket councils.

The Emirates D10 has 34 matches in total, running until Friday, August 7.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1793-1816) Expanded the tower into a small fort and transferred his ruling place of residence from Liwa Oasis to the fort on the island.

Sheikh Tahnoon bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818-1833) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further as Abu Dhabi grew from a small village of palm huts to a town of more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) Repaired and fortified the fort.

Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon (ruled 1845-1855) Turned Qasr Al Hosn into a strong two-storied structure.

Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (ruled 1855-1909) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further to reflect the emirate's increasing prominence.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan (ruled 1928-1966) Renovated and enlarged Qasr Al Hosn, adding a decorative arch and two new villas.

Day 2, Dubai Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Pakistan’s effort in the field had hints of shambles about it. The wheels were officially off when Wahab Riaz lost his run up and aborted the delivery four times in a row. He re-measured his run, jogged in for two practice goes. Then, when he was finally ready to go, he bailed out again. It was a total cringefest.

Stat of the day – 139.5 Yasir Shah has bowled 139.5 overs in three innings so far in this Test series. Judged by his returns, the workload has not withered him. He has 14 wickets so far, and became history’s first spinner to take five-wickets in an innings in five consecutive Tests. Not bad for someone whose fitness was in question before the series.

The verdict Stranger things have happened, but it is going to take something extraordinary for Pakistan to keep their undefeated record in Test series in the UAE in tact from this position. At least Shan Masood and Sami Aslam have made a positive start to the salvage effort.
