IPL phenom Vaibhav Suryavanshi continues sizzling form during England tour

Swashbuckling opening batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his brilliant form with the bat as he blasted a quickfire fifty in the third ODI against England's U19 team.

Part of India's U19 tour of England, the precocious Suryavanshi was expected to dominate against players of his age, and he did not disappoint.

He smashed 48 runs from just 19 deliveries in the first match of the series as the Indian team chased down 175 inside 25 overs at Hove late last month.

The 14-year-old hit three fours and five sixes during the six-wicket win.

Suryavanshi then made a more sedate 34-ball 45 in the second match which England won by just one wicket in the final over.

He turned up the heat in the third match of the series on Wednesday in Northampton, smashing 86 from just 31 balls.

The England U19 side had set an imposing target of 269 in 40 overs in a rain-curtailed clash. The opening batter was given the license to go after the bowling, and he did not need a second invitation.

Suryavanshi cracked six fours and nine sixes during his entertaining innings, clearing the boundary ropes with ease.

That Suryavanshi would dominate U19 bowlers came as no surprise after his sensational debut season in the Indian Premier League with Rajasthan Royals where Suryavanshi hit 252 runs in seven matches, including a century which made him the youngest player to score a hundred in men's Twenty20 cricket.

In the IPL, Suryavanshi announced his arrival onto the big stage with a breathtaking 38-ball 101 against Gujarat Titans, and against an attack that included international bowlers like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Siraj and others.

After his IPL ton, Rajasthan captain Riyan Parag said it was incredible to see a 14-year-old take on world-class bowlers.

“It was incredible,” Royals skipper Parag had said. “We’ve spent two months with him and we have seen what he can do. But to see him do this against the world-class bowlers … I can't express in words.”

Electoral College Victory

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

Popular Vote Tally

The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.

Country-size land deals

US interest in purchasing territory is not as outlandish as it sounds. Here's a look at some big land transactions between nations:

Louisiana Purchase

If Donald Trump is one who aims to broker "a deal of the century", then this was the "deal of the 19th Century". In 1803, the US nearly doubled in size when it bought 2,140,000 square kilometres from France for $15 million.

Florida Purchase Treaty

The US courted Spain for Florida for years. Spain eventually realised its burden in holding on to the territory and in 1819 effectively ceded it to America in a wider border treaty.

Alaska purchase

America's spending spree continued in 1867 when it acquired 1,518,800 km2 of  Alaskan land from Russia for $7.2m. Critics panned the government for buying "useless land".

The Philippines

At the end of the Spanish-American War, a provision in the 1898 Treaty of Paris saw Spain surrender the Philippines for a payment of $20 million.

US Virgin Islands

It's not like a US president has never reached a deal with Denmark before. In 1917 the US purchased the Danish West Indies for $25m and renamed them the US Virgin Islands.

Gwadar

The most recent sovereign land purchase was in 1958 when Pakistan bought the southwestern port of Gwadar from Oman for 5.5bn Pakistan rupees.
