The UAE have played two, lost two, so far in the main round of the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, but impressed against both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In each match they bowled and fielded brilliantly, only to be let down by their batting, and Amjad Javed believes the best way for that to be remedied is by arranging more matches against the best.

Preparing to face the likes of Lasith Malinga and Mustafizur Rahman – their tormentors from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively – is tough, according to the captain. "We have been practicing really hard at the ICC Academy, but practicing in the nets and facing the real bowler is different," Amjad said. "We should get more games against these teams more regularly. We can definitely fix our batting problems, we just need more experience playing against them."

Since qualifying for such a status in 2014, the UAE have played 16 official Twenty20 Internationals. Only three of those have been against Test nations – namely, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The next two will be against giants of the game, Pakistan then India, this week. "We are not used to playing against these sort of teams," Amjad said. "When you are playing these bowlers for the first time, you can have a tough time."

The national team could not be much more familiar with their next opponents, though, and not just because Pakistan play home matches in the UAE, and have just staged a highly successful Pakistan Super League in Dubai and Sharjah. Many of the opposition players regularly turn out for corporate sides in A Division tournaments in the UAE. “Most of Pakistan’s players are playing domestically in Dubai, and many of them are friends with our team members,” Amjad said.

The UAE played warm up matches against Pakistan’s Test side in 2015, and a series of matches against the country’s A team, too. That will only mean a certain amount, though, according to Amjad. “That game will be a good game for us, but in front of the TV, playing against Pakistan is a different story,” he said. “There comes the experience. I think we should do well against them, but it is a different story when it is in front of cameras.”
