ABU DHABI // Makhete Diop came back to haunt his former employers on Wednesday, playing a pivotal role in Al Ahli’s 2-0 victory over Al Dhafra.
The Senegalese earned a penalty just before half time for Asamoah Gyan to convert and scored Ahli’s second just past the hour as the Dubai club kept up the pressure on Arabian Gulf League leaders Al Jazira.
The win kept Ahli within six points of leaders Al Jazira, who kept stayed comfortably at the top with a 2-0 win over Al Ain on Wednesday.
Diop went down under what appeared minimal contact from Dhafra goalkeeper Abdulla Sultan for Gyan to step up and give Ahli the lead two minutes before the break.
The majority of Diop’s 134 goals for the Western Region club came at the Hamdan bin Zayed Stadium and he added another one to his tally – albeit for his new employers Ahli – when he fired home after exchanging passes with Everton Ribeiro on the edge of the box on 63 minutes.
“This is life. What can I do now I’m an Ahli player,” said Diop, who moved to Ahli in the winter transfer window after a four-and-a-half-year spell at Dhafra.
“I must say congratulations to Ahli and hard luck for Dhafra. I have a job to do at Ahli.
“They are challenging for the title and with five more rounds left we just need to win every game and hope for some favourable results to come our way from the other games.”
Ahli were the more of the two teams and were good value for the three points.
Cosmin Olaroiu’s men controlled possession and territory, yet they struggled to break down a resolute Dhafra rearguard in the opening exchanges.
Dhafra had their chances and were unlucky not to reduce the arrears when a header from the Moroccan Yassine Salhi cannoned off the bar in the 70th minute.
In the first half, the Ahli keeper Majed Naser did well to block a stinging shot from Khalid Al Hajri on the near post.
The Ahli gloveman was called into action again when blocking a powerfully struck right-footer from Adil Hermach five minutes from time.

What is myofascial pain syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissue. MPS is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles, which develops knots, also known as trigger points).
What are trigger points?
Trigger points are irritable knots in the soft tissue that covers muscle tissue. Through injury or overuse, muscle fibres contract as a reactive and protective measure, creating tension in the form of hard and, palpable nodules. Overuse and sustained posture are the main culprits in developing trigger points.
What is myofascial or trigger-point release?

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.
