World-title contender Amir Khan has dismissed reports linking him with a superfight against Filipino great Manny Pacquiao in Dubai next year, saying his only focus is securing a showdown with Floyd Mayweather.
Fresh off a unanimous points victory against Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, last month, Khan has again put his name in the mix to be the man who finally unseats the unbeaten Mayweather in what could be the American’s last bout.
Pacquiao, a champion in eight different weight classes, was the 48th opponent to try, and fail, to dethrone the pound-for-pound king last month.
Since that defeat – after which it was revealed Pacquiao had torn a rotator cuff in training before the fight – noises emanating from the Filipino’s camp have strongly indicated that his next fight would take place in Dubai once the 36-year-old southpaw has recovered from his injury.
In an exclusive interview with The National, Khan, as well as officials at the Dubai Sports Council (DSC), have distanced themselves from comments attributed to Bob Arum's Top Rank promotions that a fight between Pacquiao and the two-time light-welterweight world champion could take place in the emirate any time soon.
“It’s all rumours and speculation, I’ve not spoken to Manny about a fight in Dubai and neither did our camps, so it’s untrue,” Khan said. “Look, if Manny wants to fight, we can do it, I’ve offered him and his team in the past, but they turned us down.
“If Manny mans up and wants to take the fight then it will happen, but the only fight I am interested in right now is Floyd Mayweather.”
The DSC, who would have to be heavily involved in commissioning, staging and promoting the fight, said they had no plans to stage the fight on its 2016 schedule
“The board of directors at the Dubai Sports Council have not had any such meetings to discuss a Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan fight in Dubai and they have not set any budget for this event for 2016,” said a DSC spokesperson.
Khan, who has a record of 31 wins and three losses, has won his past five fights since he lost his WBA light-welterweight title to Danny Garcia in 2012 but the 28-year-old Briton of Pakistani descent looked less than convincing in a points decision over Algieri last time out.
Khan immediately called out Mayweather after that fight and he accused the five-weight world champion of avoiding naming him as his next opponent in September because he knows the boxer from Bolton has the weapons to take him down.
“Everywhere I go fans ask me only one question: When are you fighting Floyd? I was at the Boxing Hall of Fame the other week and everyone kept asking me the same question,” Khan said.
“There is nothing more from their camp, Floyd is clearly avoiding me; that’s the fight I want, I’ve proved myself in the welterweight division, so I don’t know what more to do.
“He fought Pacquiao now when he is over the hill. If he had fought him five years ago, Manny would’ve beaten him. I hear he wants an easy fight for his 49th and final fight; he has been mentioning names like Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield. Why not take the fight with me, if he thinks I am that easy?”
The animosity between the two camps stretches back almost 12 months when Mayweather chose a rematch with Marcos Maidana over a fight with Khan.
The enmity has seemingly heightened since, with Khan revealing that a recent conversation with Mayweather’s father and trainer regarding a potential fight with his son resulted in Floyd Sr hurling expletives at Khan.
“Yeah I spoke with him on FaceTime, his dad just went off on me, swearing and everything, saying I don’t know anything about boxing and his son would beat me,” Khan said.
“If that’s the case and his son wants an easy fight, and they say I am an easy fight for him, so why are they avoiding me?”
Relations with domestic rival Kell Brook appear just as frosty with Khan also pouring cold water on talk of challenging his fellow Brit for his IBF welterweight belt.
“I am not fighting Kell Brook and that’s the end of it. Eddie Hearn and Kell has been very disrespectful, trying to fool the public, using my name to keep his fighter relevant in the media,” Khan said.
“What has Kell done? He’s fought bums his entire career, went to the US, won a fight against Shawn Porter, which was a very close fight and many thought he lost that fight. He is fighting unknown fighters like Jo Jo Dan and Frankie Gavin, and I am fighting top-10 fighters and world champions.
“Why should I give him a payday? Our fight will only happen if he goes on and fights two or three top boxers and beats them, then I am here and he will get his fight.”

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

'The worst thing you can eat'
Trans fat is typically found in fried and baked goods, but you may be consuming more than you think.
Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:
Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.
Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.
Refrigerator dough - Products such as canned biscuits and cinnamon rolls often contain trans fat, as do frozen pizza crusts.

How the UAE gratuity payment is calculated now
Employees leaving an organisation are entitled to an end-of-service gratuity after completing at least one year of service.
The tenure is calculated on the number of days worked and does not include lengthy leave periods, such as a sabbatical. If you have worked for a company between one and five years, you are paid 21 days of pay based on your final basic salary. After five years, however, you are entitled to 30 days of pay. The total lump sum you receive is based on the duration of your employment.
1. For those who have worked between one and five years, on a basic salary of Dh10,000 (calculation based on 30 days):
a. Dh10,000 ÷ 30 = Dh333.33. Your daily wage is Dh333.33
b. Dh333.33 x 21 = Dh7,000. So 21 days salary equates to Dh7,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service. Multiply this figure for every year of service up to five years.
2. For those who have worked more than five years
c. 333.33 x 30 = Dh10,000. So 30 days’ salary is Dh10,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service.

Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”
