Mahmood Al Zarooni, the Godolphin trainer, enhanced his growing reputation by recording his maiden two winners at Newmarket, England yesterday. The Dubai national was appointed in March to take charge of the Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket where Godolphin were originally based. He celebrated his first Newmarket winner yesterday when Al Sharood edged a thrilling battle with the newcomer Googlette in the ChemTest EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
The two-year-old, seventh of 11 at Ascot nearly three weeks ago, was always prominent and knuckled down well to the task in hand after Googlette, the outsider, went on over a furlong out. Al Sharood came home strongly under Frankie Dettori to lead well inside the final furlong and score by a neck. "I am very happy as Newmarket is not an easy racecourse to have winners at," said Al Zarooni. "She is a nice filly and will be much improved for this race. Frankie did very well on her and she has a good attitude."
Dettori then partnered Film Score to victory in the Peters Elworthy & Moore Maiden Stakes. Al Zarooni's debutant, gelded ahead of his debut, got to grips with Mata Keranjang, the favourite, inside the final furlong and went on to record a victory by three-quarters of a length. Al Zarooni said: "He showed us that he is a nice horse with ability. Frankie was very happy with him and felt that he will improve as he was very green.
"Frankie was very clever on him as he kept him away a little from the other horses." Meanwhile, Godolphin is to have two runners, Rewilding and Al Zir, in the premier British Classic, the Investec Derby, at Epsom Downs next Saturday. Dettori takes the mount on Rewilding, whom he partnered to an impressive success at Goodwood on earlier this month, while Ahmed Ajtebi rides Al Zir. Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, said: "Frankie rode Al Zir on the watered gallop at Newmarket this morning and was pleased with him.
"We have decided that Frankie will be on Rewilding in the Investec Derby with Ahmed on Al Zir." Rewilding will be supplemented on Monday to join the Investec Derby field, while Chabal is being given a bit of a break and Simon De Montfort goes for the Prix du Jockey Club, the French Derby, at Chantilly on June 6. Today, Ameer makes his third appearance of the season in the Listen Novae Bloodstock Insurance Fairway Stakes at Newmarket while Dafeef will be afforded his second outing of the season at the same venue in the Listed King Charles II Stakes.
Also at Newmarket, al Zarooni will be keen to see how Ecliptic, the two-year-old Kingmambo colt, fares on his debut in the EBF Joe Aggio 30th Birthday Maiden Stakes while Mureb makes his seasonal debut in the Rowley Mile Maiden Stakes. At Haydock Park, Urban Poet makes his seasonal return in the Sports 360 Sports Advertising Specialist Stakes while, in France, Andre Fabre, the trainer, will oversee the Godolphin debut of Lawspeaker in the Listed Derby Du Midi.
