Branko Ivankovic, the former Iran coach who was dismissed by the Saudi club Al Ettifaq on Monday, is headed to Abu Dhabi for talks with Al Wahda.
Wahda are looking for a replacement for Josef Hickersberger, the Austrian who has led the team for most of four seasons, including the championship 2009/10 campaign.
Ivankovic worked in Iran for five years and led them to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
He joined Ettifaq last year after a two-year spell at China's Shandong Luneng, helping the club win the Chinese Super League and book a place in 2011 Asian Champions League.
Ivankovic was dismissed following the 2-1 defeat to Al Fateh in the first leg of the Saudi King's Cup on Saturday. The 58-year-old Croatian had taken Ettifaq to fourth place in the Saudi Premier League and to the knockout stage of the AFC Cup in Group C.
Wahda have been largely inactive this season. They chose not to have a pre-season camp abroad and did not bring any new players to the squad, aside from the Oman defender Mohammed Shaibah, taken on loan from Al Wasl.
Wahda shipped off several veterans to other UAE clubs, including Abdulrahim Jumaa (Al Jazira), Fahed Masoud (Wasl), Basheer Saeed (Al Ahli) and Hassan Amin (Al Nasr). Also, they released Hamdan Al Kamali, the UAE Olympic team captain, to Lyon, the French Ligue 1 club, on a six-month loan.
Hickersberger, who is leading the team against Al Arabi of Kuwait in tonight's Gulf Club Championship, has said he did not expect to return, saying "the coach is the one to be blamed" for poor results.
Wahda are sixth in the league with three matches remaining. They won the Super Cup, in September, and reached the semi-finals of the President's Cup.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.
SUNDERLAND 2005-06
Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.
HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19
Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.
ASTON VILLA 2015-16
Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.
FULHAM 2018-19
Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

Designed to give pupils all the information they need to improve their diet and fitness habits at home, at school and as they grow up, coaches from City Football Schools will work alongside teachers to lead the youngsters through a series of fun, creative and educational classes as well as activities, including playing football and other games.
Dr Mai Ahmed Al Jaber, head of public health at Healthpoint, said: “The programme has different aspects - diet, exercise, sleep and mental well-being. By having a focus on each of those and delivering information in a way that children can absorb easily it can help to address childhood obesity."
