Faris Al Sultan said he hopes to be at his "absolute best" for the Ironman World Championship when he competes in triathlon's ultimate event in Kona, Hawaii, in October.
By winning the European Ironman last weekend in Frankfurt, Al Sultan qualified for the world championship race, which he won in 2005.
"I had pretty low expectations before this race, especially as I was still carrying the flu and I much prefer warmer race conditions than those we had in Germany," he said.
"This race has given me the confidence and flexibility to work towards being at my absolute best this October."
Al Sultan, who is the captain of the Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team, produced his best performance in years to win in his home country. He put up with heavy rain and strong winds to win by almost six minutes from fellow German Jan Raphael, a bigger-than-usual gap in this kind of endurance race.
He was strong in all three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running - as he powered his way to victory in a time of 8hrs 13mins 50secs.
Al Sultan, 33, came out of the water in second place, and then built up a solid lead on his bike, one he never looked like losing on the final running stage.
His was the second Ironman win for the Abu Dhabi team this season; the UK's Rachel Joyce enjoyed her first victory, at the Lanzarote event in Spain, with a wire-to-wire victory.
Joyce's win also secured her automatic entry into the Hawaii championships.

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.

Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.
The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
