The UAE's MBZ-Sat, the Middle East’s most advanced Earth observation satellite, was successfully launched in a milestone moment for the country's burgeoning space sector.

The 750kg satellite blasted off into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, engineered by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, at 11.09pm (UAE time) on Tuesday, Dubai's Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre said. The launch took place at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, witnessed the launch at the MBRSC.

President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, told senators on Tuesday that he supports Israel “killing every last member of Hamas”, during a confirmation hearing that focused on his past conduct.

“I'm a Christian, and I robustly support the state of Israel and its existential defence. I support Israel destroying and killing every last member of Hamas," he said.

Mr Trump's team recently joined ceasefire negotiations in Qatar. The president-elect has warned Hamas that there will be “hell to pay” if it does not free the remaining hostages before his inauguration next week.

The UN on Tuesday said it was preparing to expand humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip under a potential ceasefire.

Hamas has accepted a draft agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of dozens of hostages, two officials involved in the talks said.

It’s the closest both parties have been to reaching a deal.
