US politicians are worried Turkey may invade north-east Syria imminently. Senior senators indicated they were prepared to impose sanctions against Washington's Nato ally.
Republican John Kennedy declared in a speech his concern that Turkey could invade the Kurdish-administered north-eastern part of Syria. On Thursday, the Pentagon announced it had doubled its presence in Syria from about 900 to 2,000 soldiers, in partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces. Turkish-backed militias are fighting the SDF in the city of Kobani, among other areas.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres demanded Israel halt its operations in Syria. Israeli strikes on Syrian military infrastructure are in breach of the country’s sovereignty, Mr Guterres said on Thursday. Since the collapse of Bashar Al Assad’s regime this month, Israel has bombed hundreds of weapons sites, airbases and naval assets in Syria and sent troops into a buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights.
Six Palestinians died and several were injured on Thursday evening following Israeli air strikes on Gaza city and Rafah in the northern and southern Gaza Strip respectively, Wafa reported. Three people were killed when Israeli warplanes struck a vehicle in Al Jenena neighbourhood, east of Rafah.
