The city of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria has fallen to rebels who overthrew President Bashar Al Assad after the mostly Kurdish SDF militia withdrew from the city, residents said on Wednesday. It was a blow to the Kurds' separatist aspirations.
The rebels also captured a main gasfield 7km west of the mostly Sunni Arab city, they said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said fighting between Turkish-backed and Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria has killed more than 200 people in three days.
Meanwhile, HTS leader Ahmad Al Shara pledged that the country would not face another war, telling Sky News that its citizens were already exhausted by years of conflict.
The Israeli military said on Tuesday that it launched about 480 strikes over the past 48 hours on strategic military targets in Syria.
The IDF said it struck what it called strategic weapon stockpiles. It said the targets included 15 naval vessels, anti-aircraft batteries and weapons factories in several cities.
Tearful appearance
Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.
Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.
She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.
