A Syria war monitor said early Monday that Israeli air strikes had hit military sites in Syria's coastal Tartus region, calling them “the heaviest strikes” in the area in more than a decade.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said air strikes hit a number of sites including air defence units and “surface-to-surface missile depots”.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday strongly condemned Israel's announcement to expand settlements in the occupied Golan Heights.

It said that the UAE regards Israel's move as “a deliberate effort to expand the occupation and is in violation and contravention of international law” and that the move “threatens further escalation and tensions” in the Middle East.

Qatar on Sunday announced the resumption of embassy operations in Syria after the fall of president Bashar Al Assad and meetings with the transitional government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that its embassy in Damascus will reopen after 13 years of severed diplomatic relations with the Assad regime since its violent crackdown on Syrian protests beginning in 2011.
