With the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, film buffs might be excused for experiencing a sense of déjà vu. The action movie set in the postapocalyptic future is the fourth instalment of a movie series that began in 1979 and launched Mel Gibson’s global acting career.
That feeling of familiarity this year is not restricted to the Mad Max story. Moviegoers have already been seen Furious 7, the latest edition of The Fast and the Furious series, and as the year progresses they will have the chance to see sequels to no fewer than 25 movies including Jurassic Park, Terminator, Mission: Impossible, Avengers, James Bond and – of course – the seventh Star Wars film.
What does this mean? Do audiences really prefer the familiar over taking the chance on something new? Are there no more stories left untold? One suspects the truth is more boring: the business plan for a sequel is easier to sell so they are more likely to get funding.

What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which can lead to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer.
There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis C is mostly transmitted through exposure to infective blood. This can occur through blood transfusions, contaminated injections during medical procedures, and through injecting drugs. Sexual transmission is also possible, but is much less common.
People infected with hepatitis C experience few or no symptoms, meaning they can live with the virus for years without being diagnosed. This delay in treatment can increase the risk of significant liver damage.
There are an estimated 170 million carriers of Hepatitis C around the world.
The virus causes approximately 399,000 fatalities each year worldwide, according to WHO.

Your rights as an employee
The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.
The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.
If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.
Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.
The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.
