Ramadan is an ideal time to give up smoking, with many of us abstaining from a variety of activities from dawn to sunset, including drinking, eating and smoking. Many a smoker attempting to kick the habit will use this time to beat a path towards a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, many of those seeking to give up cigarettes for good also encounter several impediments along the way, not the least of which is the smoke-filled air of Ramadan tents after sunset.
The Health Authority Abu Dhabi runs 13 clinics providing smoking cessation services across the emirate, to help tobacco users extinguish their final cigarette. In a step towards ensuring non-smokers and children enjoy iftar in a comfortable smoke-free atmosphere, Dubai Municipality announced that shisha smoking is banned in Ramadan tents during iftar and until 9pm. Both initiatives are welcome.
If you are a smoker spare a thought for others – particularly those who are giving up – and step outside the tent before you spark up.
